Black Caviar half-brother sells for $984,000 at Inglis Australian Easter yearling sale

A half-brother to four-time Group 1 winner Black Caviar brought about $984,000 on Wednesday to top Day 2 of the Inglis Australian Easter yearling sale.

Trainer John Hawkes outbid Black Caviar’s trainer, Peter Moody, to purchase the bay Casino Prince colt. The price in the auction currency was $1,025,000 Australian and is the sale’s highest price so far. The Australian Easter yearling sale was to conclude Thursday. Hawkes told reporters he was bidding for bloodstock adviser Rick Connolly, who selects horses for Patinack farm owner and Australian mining magnate Nathan Tinkler.

Fasig-Tipton has $170K topper at Texas sale

A Flashy Bull filly, who was the co-fastest worker during the under-tack show of the Fasig-Tipton Texas auction of 2-year-olds in training at Lone Star Park, topped the sale on Tuesday when she fetched $170,000 from the Martin Racing and Carl Moore Management. She also helped lift the sale's average price to a 24-percent increase over the corresponding auction in 2010.

Inglis sale has gains in average, median prices

The Inglis auction house’s Australian Easter yearling sale opened Tuesday with double-digit gains in the average and median prices.

Tuesday’s first session sold 128 horses, down from last year’s 153, and lost 6 percent in gross as the aggregate fell to $30,904,200. But the average price rose 13 percent to about $241,439, and the median gained 33 percent as it reached about $194,000. The buy-back rate cast a slight shadow, climbing from last year’s 17 percent to 24 percent.

Fasig-Tipton preview topped by offspring of Kafwain, Flashy Bull

Juveniles by Kafwain and first-crop sire Flashy Bull topped the eighth-mile work tab Sunday at Fasig-Tipton's Texas 2-year-old sale preview.

Hip No. 166,  Kafwain filly out of Upside, and Hip No. 164, a Flashy Bull filly out of Destiny's Yield, each covered a furlong in 10.2 seconds.

Hip No. 149, another filly, posted the quickest quarter-mile time of 22.8 seconds. The Leestown daughter is out of Chic Anita.

Barretts sale reached via Oregon trail

ARCADIA, Calif. – The yearlings bred by David and Marion Christensen are well traveled by the time they reach Barretts sales in Pomona, Calif., to be sold as yearlings.

The Christiansens breed six mares at various farms in California, and then transport the mares and sucklings back to their farm in Deer Island, Ore., to be raised. Later, the yearlings are sent back to California for the yearling sales.

Fasig-Tipton preview on tap at Lone Star

The under-tack show for the annual Fasig-Tipton Texas 2-year-olds in training sale is set for Sunday morning at Lone Star Park, with the auction to be there on Tuesday. Both the workouts and the auction are to begin at 10 a.m. Central.

The 167-horse catalog includes a large number of Louisiana-breds, including Royalty Rex, a full brother to $901,616-earner Costa Rising; St. Denis, a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Su Casa G Casa; and an unnamed Orientate filly out of Indiana Oaks winner French Braids.

Zenyatta no longer in foal, will be bred to Bernardini again next week

Zenyatta, the 2011 Horse of the Year, is no longer in foal after five weeks of pregnancy and will be bred to Bernardini again next week, according to Mike Cline, the manager of Lane's End Farm, where the seven-year-old mare is boarded.

"She came up empty on a 35-day [pregnancy] check today," Cline said. "It's not uncommon. It's unfortunate, but she's healthy, she's doing great, and we expect her to get back in foal."

Arqana creates new fall sale in Deauville

France's Arqana auction house in Deauville will host a new yearling sale in November to replace their former December yearling auction. The new yearling sale will take place Nov. 15 in Deauville and will be combined with the former autumn sale to create a new fall mixed auction.

Mineshaft recovering after surgery

Mineshaft, 2003’s Horse of the Year and champion older horse, underwent colic surgery Thursday night, according to the farm that stands him, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky., said in a press release Friday afternoon that Mineshaft was “bright and alert” Friday after undergoing surgery to treat a bowel obstruction. According to the farm statement, the 12-year-old A. P. Indy stallion suffered no blood loss to his intestine.

Top California-bred from Barretts sale already in Sadler's barn at Santa Anita

The Rock Hard Ten colt who led the California-bred portion of Monday’s Barretts March sale of 2-year-olds in-training in Pomona, Calif., is already at trainer John Sadler’s barn on the Santa Anita backstretch.

The colt sold for $210,000 to Buzz Chace, agent for the West Point Thoroughbred syndicate. The colt was consigned by Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stable, which purchased him last October at the California Cup yearling sale at Barretts for $40,000.
