Maram, winner of first Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, retired

Maram, who was to have made her 2011 debut as the likely favorite in Saturday’s Beaugay Stakes at Belmont, has retired after a veterinary exam revealed a small tear in her suspensory ligament.

A 5-year-old Sahm mare, Maram last ran in August, when she finished seventh in the Ballston Spa Handicap, won by Dynaslew.

Gourmet Girl was Cannata's claim to fame

Carl Cannata, who died on April 25 at the age of 90, knew he reached the pinnacle of Thoroughbred breeding when Gourmet Girl won the Eclipse Award as the outstanding older female of 2001.

“How many breeders get an Eclipse Award winner, especially from California?” Cannata said at the time.

Gourmet Girl was one of the highlights of Cannata’s involvement in racing, which he shared with his wife, Olivia. The couple was involved in Thoroughbred racing for nearly 30 years, from the mid-1970s until 2004, when they dispersed their holdings.

But pedigree analysts differ on how significant the trend toward speedy sires might be on the first Saturday in May.

The supplemented horses, including horses aged 2 to 4, will be auctioned immediately after Hip No. 108 at the auction, which starts at 6:30 p.m.

Liable named broodmare of the year

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2010, Claiborne Farm and its longtime client and partner Adele Dilschneider picked up one of breeding’s most prestigious awards Friday when their Liable was named 2010’s Broodmare of the Year. The Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders presented the award on Friday.

Snow Chief stakes victory a highlight for owner/breeders

A day such as April 23, when Nahem won the $150,000 Snow Chief Stakes at Hollywood Park, had been in Mike and Cory Wellman’s dreams for more than three decades.

Nahem, whom the Wellmans own and bred in partnership with John Harris, gave the couple their biggest stakes win. They have been married for 35 years, and Thoroughbred owners and breeders for nearly that long.

“It goes back a long way,” Mike Wellman said last weekend.

Stormello, promising young sire, dies from colic

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Grade 1 winner Stormello, whose first crop are 2-year-olds in 2011, was euthanized April 26 at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington due to complications from colic, Vinery Kentucky announced Thursday.

The Stormy Atlantic horse was 7.

Stormello won the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity and Grade 2 Norfolk Breeders’ Cup Stakes in 2006 and placed in four other graded races during his career, earning $700,100 from three wins in 11 starts. He entered stud at Vinery in 2008.

Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky., will host a Kentucky Derby week open house for fans on May 5, when from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. fans can see the farm's stallions, including 2006 Derby winner Barbaro's sire Dynaformer and 2008 Derby winner Big Brown. The open house also will feature a book-signing by Alex Brown, author of "Greatness and Goodness: Barbaro and His Legacy." . . . Old Friends, the equine retirement farm, will host its annual Homecoming Event and fund-raiser on May 8, starting at 4 p.m. at the facility, 1841 Paynes Depot Road, Georgetown, Ky.
