Going Ballistic joins Victory Rose band of stallions

Going Ballistic has been retired from racing at age 8.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Going Ballistic, the latest addition to California’s stallion ranks, is scheduled to arrive at Victory Rose Thoroughbreds at Vacaville, Calif., by Wednesday, farm owner Ellen Jackson said on Friday.

The 8-year-old Going Ballistic will give Victory Rose seven stallions for its 2012 roster. Earlier this year, Bold Chieftain was retired from racing and will begin his stud career at Victory Rose when the breeding season starts in earnest later this month.

Repriced, son of Roberto, dies at 24

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Repriced, one of the last remaining sons of Roberto at stud, has died at age 24.

The cause of his Jan. 27 death appeared to be a heart attack, according to Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, where the stallion had resided since 2000.

New Zealand sale-topper brings $1.4 million

New Zealand Bloodstock’s premier yearling sale in Karaka ended a two-day run Tuesday with a seven-figure sale-topper that tempered financial declines.

Te Akau Stud’s David Ellis paid about $1,435,000 for a Fastnet Rock-Nureyev colt who is a half-brother to Group 1 winner King’s Rose and to last year’s sale-topper, the Red Ransom colt Bolshoi Ruler.

Rachel Alexandra and foal back home at Stonestreet

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Rachel Alexandra and her 10-day-old Curlin colt have returned to Stonestreet Farms near Lexington, according to a post on the farm’s Facebook page.

On Monday, Stonestreet posted a photograph of the mare and foal in a stall, captioned, “Home Sweet Home!”

The 6-year-old mare and her foal had been at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington since Jan. 27 due to what Stonestreet termed “a precautionary measure after her delivery for pain management related to the birth.”

Woodford Thoroughbreds to open training division

Woodford Thoroughbreds has hired trainer John Dowd and plans to open a public training division this summer at CloverLeaf Farms II in central Florida.

The Reddick, Fla., training operation will begin accepting horses this summer, according to an announcement from Woodford, which currently has a commercial breeding farm in Versailles, Ky. John Sykes owns both Woodford and CloverLeaf, and Matt Lyons is general manager for both properties.

Barretts March sale catalogs are out

Catalogs are available online now for the Barretts March selected 2-year-old sale, set for March 5 at Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif.

The catalog, which was scaled down by 22 percent last year, has grown in 2012 with 149 juveniles in the book, a 41 percent increase over the 2011 figure. Once again, the auction will take place in a night session that starts at 6 p.m. local time in the Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex.

James Edwards, New York breeder, dead at age 94

LEXINGTON, Ky. - James Edwards, a two-time New York breeder of the year who owned Keane Stud in Amenia, N.Y., and the Stallion Park in Millbrook, N.Y., has died at age 94. 

Edwards died at his home in Redding, Conn. He was the owner and president of Churchill Business Forms in Newton, Conn.

Edwards was an active member of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders and campaigned such stakes winners as graded winner Dewars Rocks, Princess Dixie, Image Maker, Talc Duster, Kate’s Valentine, Pretty Suzi, Talc’s Coventry, Bo Bo’s Vice, and Solar Deputy, among others.

Rachel Alexandra makes precautionary trip to hospital

Rachel Alexandra foaled a colt by Curlin on Jan 22.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year who produced her first foal on Jan. 22, was taken with her Curlin colt to the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital here "as a precautionary measure after her delivery for pain management related to the birth," according to a statement from Stonestreet Farms.

The statement said both mare and foal are "fine."

"Rachel has been under the care of Dr. Bonnie Barr, who is doing a great job of making sure both mother and foal are doing well," the statement issued Friday evening said.
