Lexington high school begins equine program

LEXINGTON, Ky. − Starting this fall, Lexington Catholic High School will open a door into the horse industry for some of its students, thanks to a new program that Thoroughbred interests hope might attract a new generation of leaders to one of Kentucky’s largest agribusinesses.

Keeneland April juvenile sale catalog available online

The 161-horse catalog for Keeneland’s April select juvenile sale is now available online at www.keeneland.com.

The auction will take place at Keeneland’s sale pavilion on April 9, starting at 4 p.m. An under-tack preview for the auction is set for April 5, starting at 10:30 a.m.

The 2012 catalog number is nearly level with last year’s catalog of 169 horses, which was 7 percent lower than in 2010. Print editions of the catalog will be mailed the week of March 19.

Barretts March select juvenile sale opens season with a bang

Danox Co. Ltd. bought the $435,000 topper in Monday's Barretts March sale of selected 2-year-olds, an Empire Maker filly.

POMONA, Calif. – The Barretts March sale of selected 2-year-olds in training on Monday showed growth in key categories when compared to the 2011 sale. An Empire Maker filly that sold for $435,000 topped the sale, the first major select juvenile auction of the season.

Boosted by buyers from Japan and California-based owner Paul Reddam, the sale sold 77 horses for $8,426,000, an average of $109,429. The average rose 8.6 percent from last year’s figure of 100,709. There were 149 horses in the catalog, with 44 listed as not sold and 27 withdrawn.

Lady Railrider will be bred to Lucky Pulpit

Lady Railrider, a five-time stakes winner who earned $603,041, has been retired and will be bred to Lucky Pulpit, according to a statement released last week by Harris Farms of Coalinga, Calif.

Lady Railrider raced for breeders Larry and Marianne Williams, who also own Lucky Pulpit, the leading freshman stallion in California in 2010.

Sand Cove, Canadian champion, dies after battle with laminitis

Sand Cove, a winner of nine stakes and more than $1 million and Canada’s champion older horse in 2010, died at the Rood & Riddle veterinary clinic in Kentucky on Feb. 13 following a month-long battle with laminitis.

Retired to stud last fall with a record of 12-5-7 from 36 starts, the 7-year-old Sand Cove was scheduled to stand at James and Janeane Everatt and Everatt-Meeuse’s Shannondoe Farm in St. Thomas, Ontario, and had been booked to 40 mares.

Many familiar faces among California-breds at Barretts March sale

The California-breds offered at Monday’s Barretts March sale of selected 2-year-olds in training may look familiar to prospective buyers.

Of the 21 California-breds in Monday’s catalog, 13 went through the ring at the Barretts October Yearling sale last fall and are being pinhooked to the 2-year-olds in-training sale. That group includes colts by Candy Ride and Tribal Rule who were among the most expensive hips sold at the yearling sale.

Grade 1 winner Telling to stand stud in Florida

JoAnn and Alex Lieblong’s Telling, winner of the Sword Dancer Invitational in 2009 and 2010, will enter stud this year at Stonewall Farm Ocala, the Florida farm confirmed Friday.

The 8-year-old A. P. Indy horse will stand for $6,500 stands and nurses, with special consideration given to out-of-state mares.
