Bodemeister to stand at WinStar

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky Derby and Preakness runner-up Bodemeister will stand at WinStar Farm in Lexington when his racing days are over, the farm and the colt’s owners announced Thursday.

WinStar and the 3-year-old Empire Maker colt’s owners, Ahmed Zayat and Michel and Tiffany Moreno, have put together a partnership to stand the colt. Zayat and the Morenos will continue to race the 3-year-old Empire Maker son. Bodemeister is pointing for the July 29 Haskell at Monmouth.

2012 yearling sales: Flower Alley having rebound year

Flower Alley’s stud fee this year began at $7,500, but it doubled to $15,000 after his Derby- and Preakness-winning son I’ll Have Another’s success this spring.

With the 2012 Triple Crown in the history books, it’s interesting to compare the career of Flower Alley with that of another classic sire, Birdstone, since the two have traveled similar paths to success.

Hollywood Wildcat, BC Distaff winner and dam of War Chant, dies at 22

Champion Hollywood Wildcat, the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner who produced 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner War Chant, has died of cancer at age 22.

The mare died on June 23 at Roseglade Farm near Wilmore, Ky., according to Thoroughbred Times, which first reported it. She was reported in foal to Kitten’s Joy when she died.

Rachel Alexandra foaled a colt by Curlin on Jan 22.

Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, is expecting a filly by Bernardini, Stonestreet Farm announced Saturday on its Facebook page.

The Bernardini filly will be the 6-year-old Medaglia d’Oro mare’s second foal. Her first, a colt by Stonestreet’s 2007 and 2008 Horse of the Year Curlin, was born at the Lexington, Ky., farm on Jan. 22.

I’ll Have Another sold for stud duty in Japan

I'll Have Another has been sold for stallion duty in Japan.

I’ll Have Another, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes last month, is bound for stud duty in Japan.

Owner Paul Reddam said Friday that a deal has been reached with Shigeyuki Okada’s Big Red Farm on the island of Hokkaido to stand I’ll Have Another beginning with the 2013 breeding season. Financial terms were confidential, Reddam said.

I’ll Have Another is currently based at trainer Doug O’Neill’s stable at Betfair Hollywood Park.

OBS June opener shows across-the-board gains

LEXINGTON, Ky.  - A $200,000 Unbridled’s Song colt led across-the-board gains at Tuesday’s opening session at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s three-day June juvenile and racing-age sale in Florida.

The first session ended Tuesday evening with 211 horses sold, as compared to 176 last year. the 2012 gross was $4,949,300, up 35 percent from last year’s $3,662,500. The first day’s $23,456 average price increased 13 percent from 2011’s $20,810, and the $16,000 median made a gigantic move, rising 68 percent from last season’s $9,500.

OBS sale: $200K colt the session leader

A $200,000 Unbridled’s Song colt led early selling Tuesday as the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company began its three-day June juvenile and racing-age sale in Florida.

Blinkers On Racing Stable signed for the 3:30 p.m. session-leader, a son of the Fusaichi Pegasus winner Kauai Calls. At the under-tack show last week, the colt breezed an eighth-mile in 10 seconds, the co-fastest one-furlong time for the day.

McKathan Brothers, agent, consigned the gray or roan colt, who was cataloged as Hip No. 56.
