Jockey Club expects no growth in 2013 foal crop

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Jockey Club expects the North American registered Thoroughbred foal crop to hold steady at least through 2013, according to figures the registry released Saturday afternoon that project the 2013 registered crop at 24,700.

That is the same number the Jockey Club projected last year for the 2012 foal crop, the smallest crop since 1971, which had 24,301 registered foals. Foal crop projections are based on the Reports of Mares Bred that The Jockey Club receives by the reports’ Aug. 1 due date each year.

Fasig-Tipton sale-topper headed to familiar environs

A Medaglia D'Oro filly out of Wait A While selling for $1.575 million topped the Fasig-Tipton yearling sale.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Alan Cohen seemed a little conflicted after his filly Wait No More, a Medaglia d’Oro daughter of Cohen’s champion Wait a While, topped Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga select yearling sale. Despite having sent her through the ring for $1,575,000, Cohen says he’s not sure he can part with many other foals, especially those out of Wait a While.

“We always thought we’d sell one or two, so that’s it, no more!” he said with a broad smile not long after the sale. “They ain’t getting another Wait a While.”

Fasig-Tipton: Saratoga select sale has solid second night, cutting losses

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga select yearling sale was a late closer this year. Twenty-four hours after its Monday opener saw average price sink 21 percent and median plummet 30 percent, the auction rebounded with gains at its Tuesday night session. But they were not enough to erase all the earlier losses, and the sale results – notable for diverse domestic spending as Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum dialed his bidding back – still landed in negative territory overall.

Fasig-Tipton: Soft market for opening night of Saratoga select yearling sale

Barbara D. Livingston
Opening night of the Saratoga select yearling sale saw sharp declines from last year's upbeat numbers.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – It took most of the night, but when Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum finally bid $1 million for a yearling Monday night at Fasig-Tipton’s Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion, the auction’s restless spectators spontaneously erupted in a loud cheer.

Fasig-Tipton: Two seven-figure colts can't rescue first session of select yearling sale

Barbara D. Livingston
A $1.2 million Street Cry colt out of Serenading tops the first session of the Fasig-Tipton sale.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sales figures at the Fasig-Tipton yearling auction on Monday night collapsed despite the sale of two million-dollar-plus colts late in the sale.

The two late sales rescued the figures from even more dismal returns, serving to bolster an extremely soft market that seemed to hit its ceiling any time bidding approached $400,000. Prior to the sale of the two colts, the highest-priced horse to sell had been a Tapit filly that brought a final bid of $500,000.
