Journeyman drops fee for Wildcat Heir, raises Awesome of Course

Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud in Ocala, Fla., released 2013 stud fees for its 13-horse roster on Sunday, headlined once again by Wildcat Heir, currently Florida’s leading general sire.

Wildcat Heir will stand for $8,000, down from $10,000 in 2012. From his first four crops to race, the 12-year-old Forest Wildcat horse has sired 18 stakes winners, including Grade 3 winner Derwin’s Star in 2012.

Journeyman boosted Awesome of Course’s 2013 fee to $7,500 from $5,000 in 2012. He is the sire of champion Awesome Feather and 2012 Grade 3 winner Fort Loudon.

Keeneland sale: Sixth session ends with across-the-board gains, $350K topper

Though no horse surpassed a $200,000 price tag until the final offering of Sunday’s sixth session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, the steady growth of the middle market helped fuel across-the-board gains.

Keeneland reported 265 horses sold on Sunday for $10,740,300, a 21.3 percent increase compared with 2011, when 271 sold for $8,852,700. Average sale price of $40,529 was a 24 percent spike from last year’s figure of $32,667, while median rose 28 percent to $32,000 compared with $25,000 in 2011.

Taylor Made drops Unbridled's Song's stud fee

Taylor Made Stallions in Nicholasville, Ky., announced on Sunday that stud fees for four of its five returning stallions will be lower in 2013. Prominent sire Unbridled’s Song will stand for $60,000, down from $85,000 in 2012, payable when foal stands and nurses.

Unbridled’s Song has sired 96 stakes winners and 42 graded stakes winners from 13 crops of racing age, including champions Midshipman and Embur’s Song, and his progeny have earned more than $84 million. In 2012, he is represented by Grade 1 winner Emcee.

Keeneland sale: Sixth session running ahead of last year

As the Keeneland November breeding stock sale settled into the middle market portion of its schedule, the sale’s economic indicators continued to post gains from last year.

Through the first five hours of Sunday’s session, revenues totaled $5,159,700 from 129 horses sold. The average sale price of $39,998 and the median of $30,000 were both well ahead of the final numbers from last year’s sixth session.

Keeneland sale: Fifth session average drops; $435K mare Atrea tops of the day

After posting solid gains on Friday, the Keeneland November breeding stock sale saw its average dip slightly during Saturday's fifth session, despite four horses selling for $250,000 or more.

Led by session-topping Atrea, purchased for $435,000 by Glen Hill Farm, Saturday's session included 270 horses that sold for total receipts of $11,495,600. At last year's fifth session, 274 horses sold for a total of $13,017,000. However, the 2011 session included 26 horses from the record-setting dispersal of the late Edward P. Evans's Spring Hill Farm that sold for a total of $1,820,500.

Keeneland sale: Atrea new session topper at $435,000

The young mare Atrea, from the family of outstanding broodmare Get Lucky, became the new session topper Saturday evening as the Keeneland November breeding stock sale continued, with Craig Bernick of Glen Hill Farm signing the ticket on the $435,000 purchase.

The 5-year-old Storm Cat mare, who was consigned by Lane's End, agent, is in foal to Flatter. Bernick said he paid "about $100,000 more" than he expected for the mare after a spirited round of bidding.

"I couldn't help myself," Bernick said.

Keeneland sale: Sekmet, full sister to In Lingerie, brings $310,000

Sekmet, a full sister to Grade 1 winner In Lingerie, sold for $310,000 to Besilu Stables on Saturday, establishing a high price for the fifth session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale midway through the day.

The 7-year-old Empire Maker mare, consigned by Winter Quarter Farm, agent, is in foal to City Zip. Her first foal is a yearling.

Keeneland sale: Saturday's fifth session off to a good start

After posting gains in average and median prices Friday, the Keeneland November breeding stock sale opened with solid early figures in its fifth session on Saturday, as nine horses sold for six figures through the first five hours.

Through the first 136 horses sold Saturday, gross receipts totaled $5,771,700, for an average price of $42,439 and a median of $35,000.

Aikenite to stand at Calumet in 2013

Multiple graded stakes winner Aikenite, who was retired in late October because of an ankle injury, will begin his stud career in 2013 at Calumet Farm in Lexington, Ky. A stud fee for Aikenite, a 5-year-old Yes It's True horse, will be announced at a later date. He will become the first horse to stand at Calumet in the Brad Kelley era.

In May 2012, Kelley purchased Calumet for about $36 million from a trust that had been set up by the late Henryk de Kwiatkowski, and he moved his Hurricane Hall and Bluegrass Hall breeding and racing operations to the historic property.

Keeneland Sale: Major Wager, in foal to More Than Ready, brings $260K

The graded stakes-producing mare Major Wager was the highest-priced mare early as the Keeneland November breeding stock sale continued on its fifth day on Saturday, selling to Eaton Sales for $260,000 to become the early session topper.

Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned the 14-year-old Valid Wager mare, who was in foal to More Than Ready.

Major Wager is the dam of four winners from as many foals to start, including J Be K, who won the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes, Grade 3 Bay Shore, and Grade 3 Jersey Shore Stakes in 2008.
