Lord Avie, 1980 champion and prominent sire, dies at age 34

Lord Avie, who was voted the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male in 1980 and later became a productive sire, died on Friday at Blue Ridge Farm in Upperville, Va. He was 34.

By Lord Gaylord and out of the Gallant Man mare Avie, Lord Avie was purchased by trainer Daniel Perlsweig at the 1980 Hialeah open sales of 2-year-olds in training for a group of clients named SKS Stable. Perlsweig, a successful conditioner in the Midlantic region, paid $37,000 for the colt and stabled him at Monmouth Park, where he broke his maiden in his second start in June 1980.

Leroidesanimaux to stand for $25,000 in 2013

Led by classic-producing sire Leroidesanimaux at $25,000, Woodford Stallions LLC at Stonewall Farm Ocala in Florida unveiled its 2013 stallion roster and fees on Friday.

The 12-year-old Candy Stripes horse, best known as the sire of 2011 Kentucky Derby winner and champion Animal Kingdom, stood for $22,500 in 2012.

Seeking the Dia to stand at Bridlewood Florida in 2013

Seeking the Dia, a multiple group stakes winner in Japan who earned over $5 million in his career, will relocate to the Appleton family’s Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, Fla., for 2013. His fee is $3,500 when the foal stands and nurses.

The 11-year-old Storm Cat horse stood at Haras Mantacilla in Chile for a private fee in 2012. He previously stood at Hill 'n' Dale in Lexington, Ky. in 2009 and 2010 before moving to Chile in 2011.

Coil will be retired to Magali Farms for 2013 breeding season

Grade 1 winner Coil will begin his stud career at Magali Farms in 2013

Coil, a three-time stakes winner best known for winning the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in 2011, will be retired to stud at Magali Farms in California for the 2013 breeding season, the farm announced on Friday. He will stand for $5,000.

Trained by Bob Baffert for Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Coil, a 5-year-old in 2013, has won 6 of 13 starts and $1,064,360. He has a chance for one more win. Coil will start in the $150,000 San Pasqual Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on Jan. 5 before being sent to the farm, Baffert said on Saturday.

Cal-bred Weewinnin ready to take next step for Koriner after upset win

ARCADIA, Calif. – Any respect afforded to the 2-year-old California-bred Weewinnin in early 2013 is going to come grudgingly.

Such is life for a young horse best known for winning the $200,000 King Glorious Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park on Dec. 16 and paying $122.

“Until he comes back, it’s a fluke, right?” trainer Brian Koriner said.

Havre de Grace sold for $10 million at the Fasig-Tipton November sale, the third-highest price ever for a broodmare or broodmare prospect.

Highlighted by the $10 million sale of Havre de Grace, the 2012 auction season largely fulfilled hopes that the Thoroughbred marketplace had stabilized after the recession. But that’s not to say it was easy. Sellers still struggled in a highly selective marketplace, even as buyers complained they were overpaying for higher-quality bloodstock.

Group 1 winner Rulership to stand at Shadai

Rulership, a Group 1 winner in Hong Kong this year, has been retired and will enter stud in 2013 at Shadai Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido, Japan.

The 5-year-old King Kamehameha horse won eight of 20 career starts, earning $7,828,712.

He enjoyed his best season of racing in 2012, winning the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong and the Group 2 American Jockey Club Cup in Japan, as well as recording four other Group 1 placings. Rulership won two Group 2 events in 2011.
