Sanan sells Kentucky farm to Borges Torrealba

Padua Stables’ Satish Sanan has sold his family’s Kentucky farm to Borges Torrealba Holdings, the farm confirmed on Tuesday. The Torrealba family of Brazil recently made a major investment in Robert and Blythe Clay’s Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky., which managed the Padua farm near Lexington, Ky., for Sanan. The reported sale price is $8.8 million.

Grade 1 winner Haynesfield represented by first foal

Haynesfield retired with 10 victories from 19 starts and more than $1.3 million in earnings.

Grade 1 winner Haynesfield has been represented by his first reported foal, a filly out of the stakes-winning Friends Lake mare Soundwave.

Out of the stakes-placed Eastern Echo mare Echo Echo Echo, Soundwave is a half-sister to six winners, including Grade 2 winner Letgomyecho and stakes placed Balaagha and Northern Iowa.

Tarfah, dam of Camelot, to Giant’s Causeway

Camelot won the English 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, and the Irish Derby this year.

Tarfah, the dam of two-time European champion Camelot, has been shipped to the U.S. to be mated with 2012 leading sire Giant’s Causeway at Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky.

“She was sent from England over here,” Ashford Stud general manager Dermot Ryan said. “That shows how international [Giant’s Causeway] is, when you see mares of that caliber coming over here.”

Ice Box’s first foal born in Florida

Ice Box will maintain his $7,500 stud fee.

Grade 1 winner Ice Box was represented by his first foal on Jan. 5, a filly born at Buena Vista Farm in Ocala, Fla.

The filly is out of the unraced Bluegrass Cat mare Vision in Blue.

Ice Box, a 7-year-old Pulpit horse, won the Grade 1 Florida Derby in 2010 before finishing a fast-closing second to Super Saver in the Kentucky Derby. Overall, he won three of 16 career starts for earnings of $948,068.

Kentucky farms to host open houses for breeders

A number of Lexington, Ky.-area Thoroughbred farms will host open houses and stallion showings for breeders to coincide with the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, which runs from Jan. 7 through Jan. 11.

Additional events will be added to this calendar as they are announced.

Stakes winner Furioso’s fee set at $5,700 by Darley Japan

Furioso, a multiple stakes winner and four-time Horse of the Year as voted by the National Association of Racing, will stand at Darley Japan in 2013 for a fee of 500,000 yen, or about $5,700.

TCA stallion season auction raises more than $700K

The 23rd annual Thoroughbred Charities of America Select Stallion Season Auction generated robust bidding on 22 stallion seasons and other prizes on Jan. 5 at the Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington, Ky., boosted by a late addition to the stallion season list who arrived straight from the industry headlines.

Overall receipts for the evening auction came in at $727,000, a number that may be adjusted slightly, as some of the seasons had reserve prices.

Cissell rejoins WinStar as director of stallion operations

 

Tony Cissell has re-joined WinStar Farm to serve as director of stallion operations for the Versailles, Ky. facility.

Cissell left WinStar in the fall of 2011 after working as general manager of the operation for about six years. During his tenure, WinStar won the Eclipse Award as leading owner in 2010, when it campaigned Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer. He had previously worked at Calumet Farm, Middlebrook Farm and Castleton Lyons.

WinStar to conduct stallion season drawings as it opens new stallion barn

WinStar Farm will conduct drawings for a “Breed to Win” promotion, providing an incentive for supportive breeders with a complimentary 2013 breeding season to 12 of the farm's stallions.

Fiscal-cliff bill beneficial to owners and breeders

The legislation signed to prevent the national “fiscal cliff” included a pair of provisions for tax incentive programs that benefit Thoroughbred owners and breeders.

The Section 179 expense allowance will be increased to $500,000 in 2013, with a phase-out dollar-for-dollar once the investment reaches $2-million. Additionally, the expense allowance was retroactively increased from $125,000 to $500,000 for property purchased in 2012.
