Illinois: Shore Breeze's reign continues for third straight year

Shore Breeze, the leading general sire in Illinois in 2010 and 2011, remained in that position in 2012 based on an active group of runners spread across the East and Midwest. A 15-year-old son of the great, late Danzig, Shore Breeze sired 36 winners in 2012, and his progeny earned $904,067, nearly $70,000 ahead of Cherokee Rap, who died in 2012, on the Illinois general sire list.

Ohio: Mobil among trio of newcomers giving state a boost

Canadian champion Mobil, whose progeny earned more last season than any other incoming Ohio-based stallion for 2013, relocates to Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm in Polk, Ohio, from Schonberg Farm in Ontario.

Rachel Alexandra has surgery for foaling complications

Rachel Alexandra had surgery Wednesday at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. after delivering her second foal, a Bernardini filly, early the day before.

The condition of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra remained "serious" on Thursday morning following surgery the prior night related to foaling complications.

Kentucky farms eligible for federal disaster aid

Gov. Steve Beshear announced on Wednesday that Kentucky horse breeding farms are now eligible for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency’s Emergency Conservation Program.

The program provides emergency funding and technical assistance to farmers and ranchers to rehabilitate farmland damaged by natural disasters and for implementing emergency water conservation measures in periods of severe drought.

Atta Boy Roy retired to stud at age 8

Grade 2 winner Atta Boy Roy has been stabled at Canterbury all summer. He will race on the meet's closing-day card.

PHOENIX – Fittingly, it’s ‘atta boy’ for Atta Boy Roy. The horse, who had plenty of success at Turf Paradise, was recently retired to stud at age 8.

Owned by R.E.V. Racing and trained by Valorie Lund, Atta Boy Roy won 14 races, including the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes in 2010, finishing in the money in nine other races.

Atta Boy Roy started and finished his career at the Phoenix track. He won his first race April 18, 2008, and finished second in his final start, the Swift Stakes, here Feb. 1. He won 5 of 14 starts at Turf Paradise with four second-place finishes.

Society’s Chairman represented by first foal in Ontario

Grade 3 winner Society’s Chairman was represented by his first foal on Feb. 2, a filly born at Shannondoe Farm in St. Thomas, Ont.

The farm reported that the foal is a “gorgeous filly, good bone and balance; three white socks and a big white face.”

The filly, bred by David Clancy, is out of the winning Vindication mare Southern Oaks, a daughter of Canadian champion filly Brusque.
