Rachel Alexandra's veterinarians pleased by progress in week following surgery

One week following surgery for foaling complications, 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra remained stable at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., with owner Stonestreet Farm noting that attending veterinarians continue to be encouraged by her progress.

Aspen Ridge moves from Florida to Kentucky

Aspen Ridge, a stallion from the immediate family of two Canadian classic winners, has relocated to stand the 2013 season at DKMR at Colby Fields near Winchester, Ky.

The 14-year-old Wild Again horse, who will stand for a fee of $1,000, previously stood at Eclipse Farm in Morriston, Fla.

Aspen Ridge won five of 32 starts, earning $187,645, over four seasons of racing. He is represented by just four foals of racing age, three of whom have started, including multiple winner Givajunior Mint.

Point Given relocates to Calumet Farm

Dual classic winner Point Given, who earned Horse of the Year honors in 2001, will relocate to continue his stud career at historic Calumet Farm.

The 15-year-old Thunder Gulch horse, who previously stood at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., will stand for a private fee in 2013 at Calumet. He stood for $20,000 at Three Chimneys in 2012.

Although the condition of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra remained "serious but stable" on Monday as she continues her recovery from surgery for foaling complications, veterinarians at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., were encouraged by the mare's progress.

"If she wasn’t as smart and as strong-willed as she is, she wouldn't be progressing the way she is," said Dr. Bonnie Barr, an attending veterinarian on the case.

Makors Finale named Washington Horse of the Year

Makors Finale was named Horse of the Year at the 2012 Washington Champions Annual Awards banquet held on Saturday by the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash.

A Karl C. Krieg homebred trained by Tom Wenzel, Makors Finale won five of eight starts in 2012, including the Emerald Downs Derby, Auburn Handicap, and Coca-Cola Handicap. The 4-year-old colt by Makors Mark out of Coup de Foudre, by Basket Weave, earned $140,370.

British foal crop declines for fourth straight year

The size of the British foal crop declined for the fourth consecutive year, according to figures released Sunday by Weatherbys.

According to those figures, 4,366 foals were registered through the end of 2012, marking the lowest crop in two decades. Numbers are expected to rise slightly this spring after late returns are added.

Casino Drive’s first foal arrives in Japan

Casino Drive aborted a scheduled workout Wednesday morning due to sloppy track conditions at Belmont Park.

Grade 2 winner Casino Drive, a half-brother to two Belmont Stakes winners, was represented by his first foal on Jan. 26, a filly born in Japan.

The filly is out of the winning Sunday Silence mare La Sylphide, dam of two winners from four starters. Out of the unraced Blushing John mare Mocdavia, La Sylphide is a half-sister to Group 3-placed Updraft, and to the winning mare Aspen Leaf, dam of Group 3 winner Reginetta.
