Zulu Magic to stand in Michigan

Davidson’s Tracks-N-Time in Midland, Mich. has added new sire Zulu Magic to its stallion roster for 2013.

The 8-year-old son of Johannesburg was retired at the end of 2012 after a five-year racing career where he won four of 17 starts for earnings of $73,653.

Bushranger sires first winner

Multiple Group 1 winner Bushranger was represented by his first winner on Wednesday in England, when his daughter Outback Lover won a maiden race at Wolverhampton.

It was the second start for the 2-year-old filly, who is the first winner out of the winning Mujadil mare Lady Thyne. Outback Lover finished fifth in her debut effort at Lingfield three days earlier.

Not For Love, Poised to Pounce, Bowmans earn Maryland honors

The Maryland Horse Breeders Association has honored Not For Love as its stallion of the year; Poised to Pounce as its broodmare of the year; and Tom and Chris Bowman as breeders of the year.

Not For Love, who stands at Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md., earned his 10th title as the state's stallion of the year. He earned his latest honor by leading Maryland's 2012 general and juvenile sire lists by progeny earnings. The 23-year-old son of Mr. Prospector is the state's all-time career leader in both categories.

Champion Rachel Alexandra returned to Stonestreet Farm on Tuesday after spending nearly six weeks at Rood and Riddle Hospital in Lexington while recovering from abdominal surgery.

Nearly six weeks after undergoing abdominal surgery following foaling complications, 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra returned home to Stonestreet Farm in Lexington, Ky., on Tuesday to continue her recovery.

Sunset Stables brings mismanagement charges against Vinery New York

Leading New York freshman sire of 2012 Frost Giant is the subject of mismanagement charges brought by Sunset Stables against Vinery New York, which formerly stood the stallion.

Sunset Stables filed a claim of mismanagement against Vinery New York LLC on Tuesday alleging that the stud farm failed in its responsibilities to properly manage its promising young stallion Frost Giant in 2011 and 2012.

The complaint alleges that Vinery diverted potential breeders to other stallions at its Vinery at Sugar Maple farm in Poughquag, N.Y. Sunset Stables, which owns Frost Giant, is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

California champion Evening Jewel produces Medaglia d'Oro filly

California-bred champion Evening Jewel gave birth to her first foal on March 5, a Medaglia d'Oro filly born at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky.

Evening Jewel, a 6-year-old daughter of Northern Afleet, was named the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association's Horse of the Year in 2010, when she won the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes, Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, and Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap.

Shared Account delivers first foal, a Bernardini colt

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Shared Account has delivered her first foal, a Bernardini colt born March 18 at Sagamore Farm in Reisterstown, Md.

Shared Account won the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes and finished second in a pair of Grade 1 events, the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes and the Garden City Stakes, as a sophomore in 2009.

Emerald Downs plans three new aftercare initiatives

Emerald Downs, in Auburn, Wash., is planning three new initiatives that will help to showcase Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and to transition them into second careers.

The track is working on plans for a Thoroughbred Showcase, to introduce potential adopters to available horses; a Thoroughbred-only show to demonstrate the horses' prowess in second careers and to reward their owners; and a 100-day trainer challenge to re-train horses for new careers.
