Leading Kentucky juvenile sire by earnings

Veteran stallion Tale of the Cat finished 2013 atop the Kentucky juvenile sire list by earnings as his 2-year-olds bankrolled $1,822,245. The 20-year-old regally bred son of Storm Cat bested juvenile earnings runner-up Street Cry – the sire of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner New Year’s Day – by more than $78,000.

Ohio: Canadian champion finds success

Mobil and Lunarpal, recent additions to the Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm stallion roster, finished one-two on Ohio’s sire list by progeny earnings in 2013.

Mobil, a 14-year-old son of Langfuhr, was represented by 28 winners from 61 runners who earned a total of $1,583,548. He was the Buckeye State’s only stallion to reach seven figures in progeny earnings in 2013.

Illinois: Road Ruler is top returning sire

There are changes in store for the top of the Illinois stallion market.

Shore Breeze led the state’s general sire list for three straight years from 2010-12, and his progeny earned $976,722 in 2013. However, the son of Danzig has departed to stand at Iowa State University in 2014. Among the remaining stallions who stand or last stood in Illinois – including those deceased or pensioned – the late Cherokee Rap led the way in 2013, followed by Road Ruler, the state’s top returning stallion for 2014.

Indiana: Three-peat for Strong Hope

Strong Hope completed his third consecutive season atop Indiana’s general sire list in 2013 by amassing $1,166,832 in progeny earnings and edging runner-up Domestic Dispute by just less than $11,000.

The 14-year-old son of Grand Slam stands at Dr. Roger Beam’s Midwest Equine and Veterinary Hospital in Trafalgar, south of Indianapolis. He has maintained the top position in Indiana since relocating to the Hoosier State in late 2011, largely based on earnings from older horses sired during his stints in Kentucky and Florida.

Points Offthebench named California-bred Horse of the Year

Champion Points Offthebench earned another posthumous honor on Monday, when the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association named him the California-bred Horse of the Year for 2013.

The CTBA handed out California-bred honors for the past year at its annual meeting and awards dinner on Feb. 10 at the Claremont Hotel, Club and Spa in Berkeley, Calif.

Valpredo elected CTBA president

Donald Valpredo was elected on Monday to serve his fourth term as president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

The Bakersfield, Calif., resident previously served three one-year terms as the organization’s president from 1986-88. He replaces former president Sue Greene, who was termed out after three years in the position and was elected the CTBA’s secretary.

Jockey Club denies Stud Book privileges to four trainers

The Jockey Club has denied all privileges of the American Stud Book to four trainers for medication violations.

The denials of privileges include the ability to register foals and the privileges of any registration process for any Thoroughbred. Each of the rulings were effective beginning Jan. 1, 2014.

Anthony Agilar received a 10-year ban from Stud Book privileges for having been determined to have twice violated regulations tied to substances classified by the Association of Racing Commissioners International as Class 1 or Class 2 at Evangeline Downs.

Novelist to donate profits from latest book to Thoroughbred aftercare

Novelist Merle H. Horwitz has announced that he will donate all profits from the sales of his latest mystery novel, “Winners,” to the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses (CANTER), an aftercare organization dedicated to re-homing off-the-track Thoroughbreds.

Horwitz, 84, grew up in Pasadena, Calif., near Santa Anita Park. In his writing, he combines the knowledge gained from his lengthy legal career with his lifelong love of horse racing.

Neko Bay to Elite Thoroughbreds in Louisiana

Grade 2 winner Neko Bay will relocate to Elite Thoroughbreds in Folsom, La., for the 2014 breeding season, standing for an advertised fee of $3,000.

The 11-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway previously stood at Wintergreen Stallion Station in Midway, Ky., and he also shuttles to Haras Puerto De Hierro in Chile. His first Northern Hemisphere foals are 2-year-olds of 2014.

Owner, breeder J. Mack Robinson dies at age 90

Prominent owner/breeder J. Mack Robinson died Feb. 7 following complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. He was 90.

The Atlanta, Ga.-based businessman’s most notable runner was Lucky Roberto, who Robinson purchased as a 2-year-old for $100,000 in 1998. Later that year, Lucky Roberto won the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes.

Other notable runners raced or bred by Robinson include Grade 3 winners Crash Course, Cherokee Queen, and Race Artist, as well as stakes winners Cherokee Artist, Indian Legend.
