Mellon estate in Virginia listed on market for $70 million

The Rokeby Stables estate of the late Paul and Rachel "Bunny" Mellon in Upperville, Va., has been listed on the market at $70 million.

Paul Mellon, who died in 1999, was best known in U.S. racing for breeding and campaigning 1993 Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero. He received the Eclipse Award as outstanding breeder twice and bred four North American champions as well as English and French champion Mill Reef. He was also a noted philanthropist and patron of the arts. Bunny Mellon died earlier this year.

KTA/KTOB announces elected officers and directors

The Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association have elected officers and members of its board of directors for upcoming terms.

The officers of KTA/KTOB serve one-year terms and are elected by members of the joint organization’s board of directors. Members of the board of directors serve three-year terms and are elected by the full membership of the organization.

Dunkirk sold to Japan for stud duty

Classic-placed runner and young sire Dunkirk has been sold to the Japan Race Horse Agency to stand at East Stud on the island of Hokkaido beginning in 2015, Thoroughbred Daily News reports.

The 8-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song had been based at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky. since entering stud in 2010. He stood the 2014 season for an advertised fee of $15,000, and shuttled to South America to stand the Southern Hemisphere season in 2010, 2011, and 2013.

Verrazano retired to Ashford Stud

Verrazano, winner of last year's Haskell Invitational and Wood Memorial, has been retired and will stand the 2015 breeding season at Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

Multiple Grade 1 winner Verrazano has been retired due to lameness and will begin his stallion career at Coolmore's Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., in 2015.

TOBA to honor regional, state breeders and owners at awards dinner

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association’s National Awards dinner will be held Friday, Sept. 5 at the Lexington Convention Center in Lexington, Ky.

The dinner honors the achievements of Thoroughbred owners in the four major North American racing regions and breeders in 22 states and Canada.

Phipps Stable was named Owner of the Year for the eastern region, Ken and Sarah Ramsey received the award for the midwest region, Willis Horton earned the honor for the southern region, and Gary and Mary West were named Owners of the Year for the western region.

Louisiana's Coteau Grove Farms to focus on breeding operation

Coteau Grove Farms in Sunset, La., will expand its breeding operation and reduce its racing stable.

Founded in 2008 by Keith and Ginger Myers, Coteau Grove Farms entered the breeding realm with its first broodmare purchases in November 2008, and began racing in February of 2009.

“From the outset, our business plan was to build our brand through racing while continuously evaluating, upgrading, and growing a high quality broodmare band,” said Keith Myers.

Thoroughbred pedigrees represented in All American Futurity trials

The All American Futurity may be the richest race on the Quarter Horse calendar, but six horses with Thoroughbred sires or dams will also by vying for the $2.6-million purse during the trials on Thursday and Friday at Ruidoso Downs.

The American Quarter Horse Association has a special registry and numbering system for Quarter Horse-Thoroughbred crosses, referring to them as “Appendix” horses. Appendix horses are able to compete in all AQHA competitions with certain breeding restrictions to maintain eligibility.

Australian Racing Board to take over national Stud Book

The Australian Racing Board is in the process of purchasing the Australian Stud Book for about $16.7 million ($18 million Australian), the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Founded in 1878, the Stud Book is the Australian Thoroughbred industry’s record of all stallions and broodmares in the country, as well as the more than 15,000 foals per year produced in Australia. It also records brands and assists with the research and promotion of the breed. The Stud Book has been owned by the Australian Turf Club and Victoria Racing Club since 1910.

Jockey Club projects 22,000 in 2015 foal crop

The Jockey Club on Saturday projected a steadying of the North American Thoroughbred foal population in 2015, announcing an estimate of 22,000.

If the projected figures hold true, it would match The Jockey Club’s estimate for the 2014 foal crop, and snap a nine-year run of declining foal populations. The annual North American foal crop has not experienced a year of growth since 2005.
