Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin has now been among the nation's leading sires for a decade, and sired 2023 Horse of the Year Cody's Wish.

Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin made the vast majority of his starts in Grade/Group 1 races and only missed the top three once while retiring as North America’s all-time leading money winner. His high achievement has continued into his second career as a stallion, as he has been a remarkably consistent sire of upper-level horses.

National Flag building career in Ohio

A number of the most exciting sires currently standing in Ohio have moved there from other states. In the case of National Flag, he began his career in Ohio for one of the Buckeye State’s most prominent partnerships and is rewarding them as a rising star.

National Flag, who stands for a $2,000 fee for racing co-owner WinStar Farm and longtime Ohio partner Tim Hamm at the latter’s Blazing Meadows Farm in Ohio, was the state’s leading freshman sire of 2022. He stepped up to finish third on the state’s general sire list for 2023.

Unbridled Express has been a consistent leader in Indiana’s stallion ranks. This season, he will have a barnmate who looks poised to be a state powerhouse.

Mor Spirit will stand his first Indiana season in 2024 at Swifty Farms in Seymour for a $2,500 fee, joining a roster led by Unbridled Express. An 11-year-old son of Eskendereya, Mor Spirit formerly stood at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, and the numbers he garnered in that state give him a clear advantage moving to a regional marketplace.

Exaggerator tops 2023 general sire list in Louisiana

Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator is getting good interest from mare owners in Louisiana.

Skippylongstocking had a memorable year on the track in 2023, and his success played a key role in lifting Exaggerator to the top of the general sire list in Louisiana.

Exaggerator had total progeny earnings of $5,009,737 last year to edge Carpe Diem, who ranked second in the state with $4,960,721, according to Daily Racing Form statistics.

The late B. Wayne Hughes had a feeling about the flashy bay colt. He purchased the son of first-crop sire Harlan’s Holiday for a relatively modest $180,000 as a 2-year-old, and later that year, campaigned him to a Grade 1 win in the colors of Spendthrift Farm, which he had purchased in 2004. Hughes was eager to get the colt into the stallion barn at Spendthrift.

Khozan casting his own shadow as Florida's leading sire

Khozan has made a name for himself as a perennial leading Florida sire.

When Khozan went to stud, he was commonly referenced in conversation as the half-brother to multi-time Eclipse Award champion Royal Delta. Now, he has made a name of his own as Florida’s leading sire.

Khozan, who has stood his entire career at Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud in Reddick, Fla., led the Florida first-crop and 2-year-old sire lists with his initial runners in 2019. He has led the Florida general sire list for four consecutive years since, and turned in a particularly dominant performance in 2023, leading across a number of categories.
