Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack Announces 2024 Purse Increases

Officials at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR), in conjunction with the Finger Lakes Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (FLHBPA), today announced purse increases totaling $500,000 for the upcoming 2024 racing season. The 63rd consecutive season of thoroughbred racing is slated to kick off Monday, April 29, pending New York State Gaming Commission approval.

Mr. Big euthanized due to laminitis at 21

Mr. Big, one of the leading stallions in California in recent years, was euthanized Tuesday due to complications of laminitis, according to a statement released on behalf of owner George Krikorian.

Mr. Big was 21 and was standing at Legacy Ranch in Clements, Calif.

“I’m heartbroken,” Krikorian said in the statement. “Mr. Big was a very special horse.”

Caravel has been purchased by John Stewart, who plans to ship her to England to be bred to Frankel.

Caravel, winner of the 2022 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, has been privately purchased by John Stewart to join his star-studded broodmare band and will soon travel to Europe to be bred to unbeaten champion Frankel for her first mating.

Jess's Dream, lone son of Rachel Alexandra, succumbs to laminitis at 12

Jess's Dream only raced once, winning his debut at Saratoga in 2015 with John Velazquez aboard.

Successful Florida sire Jess's Dream, the only son of Hall of Fame racemare Rachel Alexandra, was euthanized following a battle with laminitis, owner-breeder Stonestreet reported on Sunday. He was 12.

Stonestreet announced last fall that homebred Jess’s Dream – by Rachel Alexandra’s fellow Stonestreet colorbearer and Hall of Famer Curlin – had been pensioned from stallion duty at Ocala Stud. He was gelded, and plans called for him to become a pony at Stonestreet’s Florida training center before health complications recently set in.
