Four-Footed Fotos
Beach Patrol, with Florent Geroux aboard, wins the Secretariat Stakes by a head Saturday.

How many Kentucky stallions who have sired eight Grade 1 winners, 41 graded stakes winners, and 8.5 percent stakes winners overall stand for less than $50,000?

The answer is one: Lemon Drop Kid.

The son of Kingmambo notched that eighth Grade 1 winner last Saturday when his 3-year-old son Beach Patrol won the Secretariat Stakes on a banner day for the 20-year-old horse at Arlington Park, where his son Da Big Hoss captured the Grade 3 American St. Leger.

Sparkman: A 'Champagne' toast for Broken Vow

Benoit & Associates
Champagne Room, by Broken Vow, wins the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar.

In the big-book era of American Thoroughbred breeding, stallion managers have become increasingly selective in weeding through the high-class colts retiring from the racetrack each year. As a general rule, no matter how talented, horses without a Grade 1 victory after their names on a catalog page need not apply, though a sterling pedigree will sometimes override that requirement.
