Great sires do not always make great sires of sires.
There is no doubt that the late Dynaformer was a great sire. His 158 stakes winners from 1,343 foals (11.8 percent) included 23 Grade 1/Group 1 winners, two champions, and four classic winners, but his best son, 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, died before he could go to stud. Very few of Dynaformer’s other good sons have been afforded a genuine chance at stud, so Dynaformer has thus far failed to establish a branch of the Roberto male line.
Gainesway Farm, which stands leading sire Tapit, announced Thursday that it would be standing Tapit’s son, Anchor Down, for the 2017 breeding season. Anchor Down will be the second son of Tapit for Gainesway, which stands Tapit’s son Tapizar, who is fourth on this year’s freshman sire list. Anchor Down will stand for a fee of $10,000.
Travers Stakes winner V.E. Day has been retired and will enter stud at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, N.Y. A son of turf champion English Channel, V.E. Day will stand for an introductory fee of $6,500.
V.E. Day, a winner on both turf and dirt, most recently campaigned in France, finishing on the board in three of four starts this season. He concludes his career with a record of 17-4-3-3 and earnings of $1,044,061. The horse scored his signature triumph when nosing out Wicked Strong in the 2014 Travers. Both were trained by Jimmy Jerkens.
Multiple graded stakes winner Protonico is the latest addition to the expanding stallion roster at Taylor Made Farm.
Protonico, a 5-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway, will stand for a debut fee of $6,500 in 2017, with Taylor Made offering, as an incentive, a lifetime breeding right after breeders have two live foals and pay the stud fees.
Firing Line, second to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, has been retired, his connections announced Tuesday evening. Stud plans are pending for the 4-year-old Line of David colt.
Firing Line, trained throughout his career by Simon Callaghan for Arnold Zetcher, concludes his career with two wins from eight starts. He had just one start in the last year.
