Gainesway Farm adds Anchor Down, son of Tapit, for 2017 breeding season

Gainesway Farm, which stands leading sire Tapit, announced Thursday that it would be standing Tapit’s son, Anchor Down, for the 2017 breeding season. Anchor Down will be the second son of Tapit for Gainesway, which stands Tapit’s son Tapizar, who is fourth on this year’s freshman sire list. Anchor Down will stand for a fee of $10,000.

V.E. Day retired, will stand at Waldorf Farm in New York

V.E. Day won $1 million during his 17-race career.

Travers Stakes winner V.E. Day has been retired and will enter stud at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, N.Y. A son of turf champion English Channel, V.E. Day will stand for an introductory fee of $6,500.

V.E. Day, a winner on both turf and dirt, most recently campaigned in France, finishing on the board in three of four starts this season. He concludes his career with a record of 17-4-3-3 and earnings of $1,044,061. The horse scored his signature triumph when nosing out Wicked Strong in the 2014 Travers. Both were trained by Jimmy Jerkens.

Protonico, a 5-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway, will stand for a debut fee of $6,500 in 2017, with Taylor Made offering, as an incentive, a lifetime breeding right after breeders have two live foals and pay the stud fees.

Kentucky Derby runner-up Firing Line retired

Firing Line is pointing to the one-mile Harry Brubaker on Aug. 24.

Firing Line, second to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, has been retired, his connections announced Tuesday evening. Stud plans are pending for the 4-year-old Line of David colt.

Firing Line, trained throughout his career by Simon Callaghan for Arnold Zetcher, concludes his career with two wins from eight starts. He had just one start in the last year.

Elusive Hour back at Pleasant Valley Thoroughbreds

Elusive Hour, a stakes-placed runner and perennial top-five sire in Michigan, will relocate to Pleasant Valley Thoroughbreds in Edmore, Mich. for the 2017 breeding season, where he will stand for an advertised fee of $1,000.

The 16-year-old son of Elusive Quality previously resided at Campbell Stables in Grass Lake, Mich. He will stand as property of James and Laura Jackson.

Effinex retired to Questroyal North

Effinex retires with more than $3 million in career earnings.

Effinex, a Grade 1 winner and the third-richest New York-bred earner of all-time, has been retired and will stand stud at Barry Ostrager’s Questroyal Stud North in Stillwater, N.Y., it was announced Tuesday.

Effinex, a son of Mineshaft owned by the Tri-Bone Stables managed by Russell Cohen, won 9 races from 28 career starts and earned $3,312,950. Only dual classic winner Funny Cide ($3,529,412) and the Japanese-based A Shin Forward ($3,421,360) earned more among New York-breds.

Social Inclusion to stand at Woodford Thoroughbreds

Social Inclusion will stand at Woodford Thoroughbreds for the 2017 breeding season.

Social Inclusion has finally found a home. Retired from racing at the end of 2015 but not bred to any mares this past breeding season, Social Inclusion will stand the 2017 breeding season at Woodford Thoroughbreds in Reddick, Fla., for a fee of $4,000.

By Pioneerof the Nile out of Saint Bernadette, by Saint Ballado, Social Inclusion won his debut by 7 1/2 lengths and registered a 110 Beyer Speed Figure in winning his second start, trouncing future champion Honor Code by 10 lengths in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race at Gulfstream Park in March of his 3-year-old season.

Neither Winchell Thoroughbreds nor Three Chimneys Farm had an entrant in the 2015 Kentucky Derby. But Ron Winchell and Goncalo Torrealba, the principals behind those respective operations, were in good spirits anyway that day at Churchill Downs as they discussed the sturdy chestnut colt they had recently agreed to race in partnership.

'Mo'-mentum stalled, temporarily

At this time last year, Uncle Mo was well on his way to a record-shattering freshman season. The resident of Coolmore’s Ashford Stud was represented by 28 individual winners, including seven stakes winners, in 2015 en route to earnings of $3,632,314, a record for a North American freshman. He was, of course, led by Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Nyquist, who emulated his young sire with an unbeaten championship campaign.
