In August 2015, a colt by the continent’s leading sire and out of a Grade 1 winner stepped into the auction ring at Fasig-Tipton’s Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and brought the hammer down for $1.2 million at the company’s boutique Saratoga selected yearling sale.

Grade 3 winner Eh Cumpari will begin his stallion career in Colombia after being purchased by the partnership of Haras Dormello and Haras la Herradura.

The deal to send the 5-year-old son of Elusive Quality to South America was brokered by bloodstock agent Ed Price, who bought the stallion prospect for $7,500 at this year’s Keeneland January horses of all ages sale.

Modern Cowboy, a Grade 3-placed stakes winner, has been sold to Korea to continue his stallion career.

The 10-year-old son of Tiznow previously resided at Shamrock Farm in Woodbine, Md., where he was set to stand for $2,500 during the 2017 breeding season. He arrived in Korea last Monday.

Modern Cowboy covered three test mares late in the 2015 breeding season but officially debuted at stud in 2016, covering 12 mares, meaning his first full crop of foals arrives this year.

Multiple graded stakes-winning multimillionaire Prayer for Relief has been retired and will enter stud at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Morriston, Fla., for the 2017 season, already in progress. A stud fee has yet to be announced.

The 9-year-old Zayat Stables colorbearer retires with a record of 46-8-6-10 and earnings of $2,277,948. He last raced Jan. 28, when he finished 10th in the inaugural $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park.

In February 2016, the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses opened a new affiliate in Chicago of its listing and networking service for owners and trainers. In its first year, CANTER Chicago established itself as one of the fastest-growing satellites of the national nonprofit, which reports that it has helped transition more than 25,000 Thoroughbreds into new homes since its founding in 1998.

The Pegasus Training and Rehabilitation Center’s 2-year-olds in training sale will be the first opportunity for West Coast buyers land a juvenile locally from the first crops of five sires at auction.

Freshman sires have been well represented during the auction’s brief history, led by its most prominent graduate Belle Gallantey, a filly from the first crop of After Market who sold for $30,000 and went on to become a multiple Grade 1 winner.

The Pegasus sale will take place Tuesday, March 21 in Redmond, Wash., preceded by a breeze show on March 20.

Dowsing, a son of leading Japanese sire Deep Impact from the Niarchos breeding program, will enter stud at Holden Thoroughbred and Running Quarter Horse Farm in Greenfield, Ind., for the 2017 breeding season, where he will stand for an advertised fee of $10,000.

The Japanese-bred 4-year-old was sent to France to run under the colors of the Niarchos family’s Flaxman Holdings, but a tendon injury kept him from making a start. Farm co-owner Jay Holden said Flaxman Holdings has retained some breeding rights to the stallion.

As the great stallion A.P. Indy contentedly lives out his days as a pensioner at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky., his legacy to the breed is already more than secure, thanks to his sons and grandsons at stud who continue to make headlines and new representatives looking to join the ranks.

If Arrogate continues his dominant parade through his principal remaining targets of 2017 he could easily earn $18 million to $20 million this year. With $7 million already in the bank and the $6 million first prize for the Dubai World Cup and about $3.5 million for another Breeders’ Cup Classic likely at his mercy, only a few more $1 million prep races would be required for him to earn more in one year than any horse in Thoroughbred history has earned in a career.
