Grade 2 winner I Spent It will continue his stallion career at Merrick Ranch in Sayre, Okla. after selling on Tuesday for $22,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale.
The 5-year-old son of Super Saver previously stood at Ocala Stud in Ocala, Fla., where he was advertised last year for a fee of $2,500. His first foals are weanlings of 2017.
A full brother to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah was born early Thursday at Summer Wind Farm in Georgetown, Ky.
Summer Wind’s Karen Bailey reported that the bay Pioneerof the Nile colt arrived at about 1:40 a.m., and that both he and dam Littleprincessemma, an 11-year-old daughter of Yankee Gentleman, were in good health.
Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds in Ocala, Fla., will stand a trio of stallions in 2017, all with unchanged fees from the previous breeding season.
Veteran stallion With Distinction will once again stand for an advertised fee of $7,500.
With Distinction, a 16-year-old son of Storm Cat, has eight crops of racing age for combined progeny earnings in excess of $21.8 million. His leading runners of 2016 included stakes winners We’re All Set and Too Clever by Half, as well as stakes-placed Distinctive Lady and Too Fast to Pass, and Puerto Rican Group 3-placed Distinction Bird.
Grade 2 winner Cool Coal Man will be exported to Iran after selling to bloodstock agent Marco Bozzi for $25,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale. Cool Coal Man previously resided at Journeyman Stud in Ocala, where he was advertised at $3,500 in 2016.
“I bought him for his grandsire line, A.P. Indy, [which] is very attractive for the Iranian breeders,” Bozzi said. “His racing career influenced the purchase, and obviously his great conformation. In Iran, the races are on the dirt, and he is a great opportunity for the country.”
Grade 1 winner Connect will enter stud at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., upon his retirement from racing.
Connect has won five of seven starts, earning $1,250,000 for owner Paul Pompa Jr. He most recently won the Grade 1 Cigar Mile in November, capping a campaign that also included wins in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby and the Curlin Stakes.
The son of Curlin is currently training at Palm Meadows toward his 4-year-old debut under trainer Chad Brown.
Grade 1 winner Purge will continue his stallion career in Korea after being relocated from The Philippines.
The 16-year-old son of Pulpit arrived on Jan. 23 after standing the past five breeding seasons at Jade Bros. Farm in Lipa City, south of Manila. He stood his first six seasons in the U.S., entering stud at Vinery in Lexington, Ky., for the 2006 season, then moving to Vinery New York for one season in 2011 before being exported.
Grade 3 winner Barbados has been retired from racing and will enter stud for the 2017 breeding season at Shamrock Farm in Woodbine, Md., for an advertised fee of $2,500.
The 5-year-old son of Speightstown had four wins in 16 starts and earned $377,241. He won the Grade 3 Hutcheson Stakes and the Spectacular Bid and Pelican stakes. He also hit the board in the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes, Grade 3 Phoenix Stakes, and Grade 3 Carry Back Stakes.
Grade 1 winner and classic sire Roman Ruler has died in Argentina after developing laminitis following a severe attack of colic. He was 15.
Roman Ruler entered stud at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Kentucky in 2006, but was a frequent and popular Southern Hemisphere shuttle stallion. He had remained in Argentina following the 2015 season, standing at Haras Vacacion in Buenos Aires.

Grade 3 winner Uncle Vinny has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Stonewall’s Prestige Stallions in Ocala, Fla., for the 2017 breeding season at an advertised fee of $4,000.
The 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo won two of 12 starts for earnings of $224,500, highlighted by a victory in the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes and third-place efforts in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes and listed Long Branch Stakes. He was campaigned by Starlight Racing and trained by Todd Pletcher.
Unbridled’s Song has continued to make headlines more than three years after his death, as he has been posthumously represented by champions Will Take Charge and Arrogate. The stallion’s final runners are 3-year-olds this year, and he appears to have another chance at a standout with Battalion Runner, the winner of an allowance/optional claimer last Saturday at Gulfstream.
