Dialed In’s fee rises to $25,000 for 2018

Dialed In is slightly ahead of Union Rags in earnings for leading freshman sire.

Darby Dan Farm released its advertised stud fees for the 2018 breeding season, led by Dialed In at $25,000.

Dialed In, a son of Mineshaft, will see an increase from the 2017 season, when he stood for $15,000. He was North America’s leading freshman sire of 2016, and followed it up this year with Grade 2 winner and Breeders’ Cup Classic hopeful Gunnevera, as well as Grade 3 winner and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hopeful The Tabulator and Grade 2-placed Chalon.

Grade 1 winner Dortmund retired, will stand in Maryland

Dortmund will return to dirt after finishing sixth in his turf debut on March 11.

Dortmund, a multiple Grade 1 winner, has been retired from racing and will stand the 2018 breeding season at Bonita Farm in Darlington, Md., for an advertised fee of $7,500.

The 5-year-old son of Big Brown finished with eight wins in 16 starts for earnings of $1,987,505. He was initially retired in April after a brief 2017 campaign but returned to training in July. However, the horse never raced during his attempted comeback.

Little change to Three Chimneys stud fees for 2018

The majority of the stud fees for the young Three Chimneys Farm stallion roster are unchanged for 2018, the farm announced Thursday.

Champion Will Take Charge, whose first foals are yearlings this year, is the most expensive stallion on the roster of six, with his fee remaining at $30,000. The son of Unbridled's Song is averaging a solid $177,103 from his 58 yearlings sold this season, including a colt who fetched $975,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

New York stallion Effinex dies at 7

Effinex won two consecutive runnings of the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap in 2015 and 2016.

Effinex, a Grade 1 winner and young New York stallion, died Wednesday in his stall of a pulmonary aneurysm at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., according to his breeder, Dr. Russell Cohen.

The 7-year-old son of Mineshaft had recently relocated to McMahon of Saratoga after standing his first season at Questroyal North in Stillwater, N.Y. this spring for an advertised fee of $10,000.

Effinex raced as a homebred for Cohen, who is racing manager of his mother’s Tri-Bone Stables, and Jimmy Jerkens trained the horse for most of his career.

WinStar raises Bodemeister's fee to $40,000

WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., has released the advertised fees for its 2018 stallion roster, with the most dramatic rise in stud fee coming for Bodemeister, who sired Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming from his first crop.

Cairo Prince's stud fee increasing for 2018

Shadwell purchased a Cairo Prince colt out of Kittery Point for $900,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale Tuesday.

Cairo Prince, a breakout star with his first crop of commercial yearlings this season, will see his stud fee rise to $25,000 for 2018, Airdrie Stud has announced.

Danzing Candy to stand at Rancho San Miguel

Danzing Candy earned more than $700,000 during his racing career.

Danzing Candy, a multiple Grade 2 winner, will enter stud during the 2018 breeding season at Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, Calif., where he will stand for an advertised fee of $5,000.

The 4-year-old son of Twirling Candy was retired in August after suffering an ankle fracture during a gallop the day before he was to start in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar.

The colt raced for the partnership of Halo Farms and Jim and Dianne Bashor. He was trained by Bob Baffert.

Top New Jersey sire Defrere dies in paddock accident

Defrere, New Jersey’s leading sire by progeny earnings all but one year from 2003 to 2015, died Tuesday following a paddock accident at Snow Hill Farm in Paris, Ky., where he resided as a pensioner. He was 25.

Thoroughbred Daily News initially reported the story.

The son of Deputy Minister was bred in Kentucky by Due Process Stable, and is a full brother to champion juvenile Dehere. He ran as a homebred for his brief on-track career, winning 3 of 5 starts for $65,300 and finishing third in the in the Bahamas Stakes at Hialeah Park.

Curlin's stud fee unchanged for 2018; Maclean's Music's fee more than triples

Led by classic sire Curlin, whose fee remains unchanged at $150,000, Hill 'n' Dale Farm has released its roster and advertised fees for the 2018 season.

Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, by Smart Strike, has sired a classic winner or classic-placed runner in each of his first five crops. The stallion's runners this season are led by champion and multiple Grade 1 winner Stellar Wind, expected to be among the favorites in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, along with Grade 2 winners Curlin's Apprival, Irish War Cry, and Keen Ice. Irish War Cry finished second in the Belmont Stakes.

Mr. Big moving to different California stud farm

Mr. Big, a winning son of Dynaformer, will relocate to Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., for the 2018 breeding season and will stand for an advertised fee of $6,500. The 14-year-old stood the most recent season at E.A. Ranches in Ramona, Calif., for $6,000.

Mr. Big has sired five crops of racing age consisting of 16 foals. Eight of them are winners, and his runners have amassed earnings in excess of $1.2 million. Big Score, a Grade 3 winner, highlights Mr. Big’s progeny, along with Grade 3-placed Big Book and five-time winner Big Break.
