Barbara D. Livingston
Keen Ice earned a 106 Beyer for his Suburban Stakes win, tying the highest figure reached by a Curlin progeny on dirt in 2017.

Hall of Famer Curlin proved himself able to sire an elite dirt runner early on, getting a Belmont Stakes winner in his first crop. In 2017, he has taken that skill to the next level, leading all sires by progeny Beyer Speed Figures of 100 or more in dirt races with 13.

Those three-digit dirt Beyer efforts were achieved by seven horses, giving Curlin the most to pass that threshold this year through Dec. 14.

Beyer Performance Standings update: War Front leads the way in 2017

Barbara D. Livingston
War Front leads all sires in Daily Racing Form's Sire List in 2017, based on the number of Beyers greater than 90.

There are many ways to evaluate a stallion’s performance, with those measures evolving as the breeding industry has over the decades. With the North American foal crop first expanding and then shrinking, stallions’ book sizes and career trajectories changing, and purses ballooning, all figures must be interpreted with proper context and a critical eye. Now, a means of evaluating racehorse performance that has been a respected standard for the last quarter-century can be used to compare stallions as well.

Sparkman: Street Sense shows he belongs with CashCall Futurity winner McKinzie

Benoit
McKinzie (right) finishes second in the CashCall Futurity Stakes, but was moved up to first following the disqualification of Solomini (outside), who interfered with Instilled Regard (center). Solomini was placed third, while Instilled Regard was moved up to second.

Throughout the history of the American and Japanese breeding industries, export of a prominent American stallion to Japan has been a sure sign of acceptance of failure. Thus, when it was announced in October 2012 that Street Sense would stand the 2013 season at Darley Stud’s Japanese outpost, it was fair to assume that his career in America was over.
