Mockingbird's stallions top a most successful year

The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association has published its year in review data, and 2001 was a very good year for the Sunshine State.

It was truly a remarkable year for Harry T. Mangurian Jr. and his Mockingbird Farm, as the industry's leading categories belong to this team.

Top breeder honors went to Mockingbird, as its homebreds earned a record $18,875,766. This was accomplished in the main with 741 winners, including 25 stakes winners.

Kashatreya flatters Cohn

Kashatreya, a veteran sprinter on the New York circuit, shoots to win the $75,000-added Hollie Hughes Handicap for the third time Sunday at Aqueduct.

Kashatreya, an 8-year-old, won the Hollie Hughes in 1999 and 2000. A gelding who races for his 90-year-old breeder, Seymour Cohn, Kashatreya nearly pulled off a Hollie Hughes triple last year by finishing second behind multiple stakes winner Say Florida Sandy.

Rare procedure saves mare's life

ARCADIA, Calif. - Cee Dreams, the winner of the 2001 California Cup Matron, is fighting for her life in a northern San Diego County equine hospital after recently undergoing surgery to have her lower right foreleg amputated.

The leg was amputated below the knee two weeks ago after she lost circulation because of injuries to her suspensories and sesamoids suffered in a workout at Santa Anita Jan. 18.

Not a typical trio of freshmen sires

LEXINGTON, Ky. - With the retirement of Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos at the end of January, the winners of all four of the most important races in 2001 will be entering stud for 2002. Once-bleak business now booms

The rising tide of prosperity at Charles Town is lifting the entire West Virginia breeding industry to new heights, and nowhere is the trend more apparent than at Beau Ridge Farm, the Bunker Hill, W. Va., establishment of John McKee and Cynthia O'Bannon.

Turkey buys two stallions

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Turkish Jockey Club, which stands 1991 Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold and other former American horses near Izmit, Turkey, has purchased central Kentucky stallions Unaccounted For and Accelerator.

The California-based Narvick International bloodstock agency brokered the private deals in America, with French agent Jean-Pierre Deroubaix representing the Turkish Jockey Club.

Two mares bring $190k at sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Two $190,000 mares topped a strong auction at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's winter mixed sale Monday at Newtown Paddocks.

The auction showed gains across the board over last year as 248 lots brought $2,829,100 in total revenue, up 12 percent from 2001, when 272 lots sold. Average price rose 23 percent to $11,408, and median gained 13 percent to $5,200.

The first $190,000 mare through the ring was Joying, a stakes-placed Storm Cat mare that David and Ginger Mullins, agent, sold to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Stautberg. Joying was sold in foal to Old Trieste.

Storm Cat mare leads Fasig-Tipton

LEXINGTON, Ky. - As of 4:30 p.m., a $190,000 Storm Cat mare was the sale-leader at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's single-session winter mixed auction on Monday in Lexington.

Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, agent, purchased the 11-year-old mare named Joying, who was carrying a foal by Old Trieste, whose first foals are yearlings this year. The mare already is the dam of Finn McCool, a stakes-placed winner by Meadowlake.

David and Ginger Mullins's Doninga, agent, consigned the mare, who was twice third in Golden Gate's Champagne Shower Stakes.

Top breeder, trainer, broodmare nominees

The New York Thoroughbred Breeders have released the nominees for top breeder, trainer, and broodmare of 2001.

The NYTB board of directors will vote on each of these categories and the winners will be revealed at an award banquet on March 26 at the Desmond Hotel in Albany, N.Y. The divisional champions and horse of the year also will be announced at the awards dinner.

New buyer Gill makes a splash

The Ocala Breeders' sale of 2-year-olds in training at Calder Race Course Tuesday was, despite the uncertain economic times, a record-breaker.

A total of 114 sold for an average of $114,395. The previous record average of $103,853 for 136 lots was set last year. The median rose from last year's $75,000 to a new high of $90,000. At last year's sale, 55 lots sold for $100,000 or more; this year 53 hit that mark and there were 22 fewer horses sold.
