This being Derby prep season, the Tampa Bay Derby takes center stage this second Saturday in March. Tapit Trice makes his stakes debut, never has been two turns, ran on Lasix in his breakthrough performance and now races without it, and looks like an odds-on favorite. He’s the sort of horse you’re supposed to play against. I just can’t find anyone to beat him.
Minor upsets look plausible in three other spots, coast to coast.

A horse-by-horse assessment of the field for Thursday’s fifth race at Golden Gate Fields.
DAZZLE THE COMMAND
Forest Command wins with 10 percent of his first-time starters, matching the national average. Can’t Be Dazzled was a two-time sprint winner at Oaklawn Park and Ellis Park. This is her second foal to race. The first is a maiden after five races. Trainer Brendan Galvin runners tend to need race experience to be at their best.
A glance at Thursday’s eight-race program at Golden Gate Fields, which has been moved forward a day because of a forecast of significant rain in Northern California on Friday. First post time is 12:45 p.m. Pacific.
Each week in this space, the top Beyer performances by maiden winners will be featured and analyzed. Click here for a complete archive.

Daily Racing Form past performances include a new symbol, a diamond with an X, which denotes when a race has been taken off the turf and moved to a synthetic surface such as Tapeta or Polytrack. In DRF Formulator PPs, the symbol will appear in blue, to correspond with the color-coded symbol for races run on synthetic surfaces. The new symbol is distinguished from the one for a race taken off the grass and moved to a dirt surface, a circle with an X.

Maiden filly stretching back to two turns put it all together in her sixth career start. Scooted to lead, drew away. High figure makes her a leading contender for G2 Santa Anita Oaks on April 8.
