Saratoga | Race 12 | Post Time 6:15 p.m. (ET)
Does it seem like Saratoga and Del Mar, both meets winding to a close, just got started? Or that they’ve been going forever? In theoretical physics, you know, there’s no distinction between past and future. Theoretically, as well, we have three winners for you Saturday.
Ladies Turf Sprint
If rain falls at Kentucky Downs, all bets are off. The European-style grass course can quickly become a bog, and races difficult to analyze under the best circumstances become nearly random.
TWIRLING LIGHT
Trainer: Peter Miller
Last race: Aug. 22, 4th
Finish: 4th by 8 3/4
Beyer: 36
Debut juvenile filly by Twirling Candy lacked speed in turf sprint, saved ground, split traffic on turn, went one-paced. Miller-trained maidens typically improve with racing, follow second out.
Saratoga | Race 7 | Post Time 4:34 p.m. (ET)
Athena Beach (#5) figures to take money off her runner-up finish to Tricky Temper earlier this month. She was obviously flattered when that rival came back to win the Union Avenue with a 112 TimeformUS Speed Figure. However, Tricky Temper was racing outside on Aug. 2, a day that featured a rail bias, whereas Athena Beach was setting the pace inside. I wonder if that enhanced her performance, so that she’s better assessed by some of her prior efforts.
This whole space could be taken up with Saratoga races on a great Travers card.
Second choice Measured Time should have his way with morning-line favorite Silver Knott in the Sword Dancer.
In the Ballerina Handicap, Scylla ought to get more than two pounds from Vahva but still holds appeal turning back from routes.
The Allen Jerkens? Eight of them (including 30-1 sleeper Reynolds Channel) merit consideration.
Travers
A fascinating race. I have a hard time ruling out with conviction anyone except Corporate Power.
Saratoga | Race 4 | Post Time 2:13 p.m. (ET)
A couple of runners with graded stakes credentials figure to vie for favoritism in this high-level allowance/optional claimer. Rocket Can (No. 1) competed in the 2023 Kentucky Derby, where he didn’t even run that badly to beat half the field. Yet he missed plenty of time thereafter and is now trying to get back on track as a 4-year-old. He did get a wide trip last time, but I’m not convinced of his overall quality, and he’s going to get bet based on name recognition.
ORANGE THUNDER
Trainer: Craig Lewis
Last race: Aug. 8, 5th
Finish: 3rd by 4 3/4
Beyer: 37
Debut juvenile filly, sired by Clubhouse Ride and sibling to graded winner Closing Remarks, was just prepping in turf sprint. Raced evenly, finished okay, work in progress, wants longer.
