Weekend GamePlan for July 30, 2022: Picks for San Diego, Jim Dandy, Bing Crosby

Barbara Livingston
At Del Mar last year, Tripoli finished second by a half-length in the San Diego, then won the Pacific Classic.

Laurel Park hosts a multiple-stakes card, and Woodbine has the Niagara, but the focus this last Saturday in July are boutique meets at Saratoga and Del Mar.

If the racing secretary really wanted to make things interesting in the Vanderbilt Handicap, co-featured at Saratoga, he’d have packed more weight on Jackie’s Warrior. As it is, six pounds isn’t nearly enough for a horse like the sharp Ny Traffic.

BIG FLAME

Trainer: Steve Miyadi

Last race: July 22, race 3

Finish: 3rd by neck

Beyer: 71

Closing sprinter broke slow, lost ground rallying wide, narrowed gap in N3L claiming sprint won by rail-trip pacesetter. Low fig aside, this effort was much better than looked.

This New York-bred maiden affair is a state-bred race in name only. Amazingly, all 10 runners in the main body of the field, plus the first also-eligible, are by Kentucky sires. Regardless of what you call it, this seems like a nice group of 2-year-olds. There’s certainly quality among those with experience, all of whom are contenders.

Free: Shaaz showing Grade 1 talent in morning

Emily Shields
Mandaloun ran fourth off the layoff last month, but trainer Brad Cox is expecting a stronger effort in the San Diego Cap.

Opening week at Del Mar, last Friday-Sunday, was a smash – average field size 10.0, median $2 win payoff more than $8. The main track played fast, and the turf course was kind to closers. Here’s hoping for more of the same where the turf meets the surf. This week’s notebook is focused exclusively on Del Mar.
