Jerardi: Go with the hot hand in Pennsylvania Derby

Benoit & Associates
Gimme Da Lute has won four straight races, including the El Cajon at Del Mar (above), and has the speed to control the Pennsylvania Derby.

There have been 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures compiled by the 10 horses entered in Saturday’s Pennsylvania Derby at Parx. All of them have been compiled by just three horses – Frosted (4), Upstart (4), and Gimme Da Lute (3).

Hovdey: Bray focusing on the highlights

Somehow, Simon Bray has been able to squeeze a few glasses of lemonade from the beach ball of a lemon he was handed last June with a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a malignancy of the blood that strikes only about 1 percent of all those dealing with some kind of cancer. The average age of those stricken with multiple myeloma is 65. Bray is 45.

Hovdey: Two-year-old races Reddam’s playground

There is plenty of historic precedent for an owner-trainer combination to dominate 2-year-old racing out West. Give a good, aggressive barn the right kind of ammunition, enjoy the right kind of luck, and the targets will fall.

Tommy Doyle once ran rampant with the homebred youngsters of E.B. Johnston. D. Wayne Lukas and Eugene V. Klein were nearly unstoppable with their store-bought 2-year-olds, as were Brian Mayberry and the Mace Siegel family.

Crist: Saratoga meet one long highlight reel

The Grade 1’s of Saratoga 2015 were won by 15 different horses, from Hard Not to Like’s Diana on July 25 to Ralis’s Hopeful last Monday. While no horse won two Grade 1’s, Liam’s Map came awfully close, losing the Whitney in the last stride to Honor Code and then trouncing an accomplished Woodward field on closing weekend.

Jerardi: The Pickett Factor should get the trip in Super Derby

The Pickett Factor edges Allied Air Raid in the Prelude.

The connections of Liam’s Map have one of America’s fastest horses, one who would be very dangerous if loose on the lead in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. They have been mostly thinking about racing him in the BC Dirt Mile, but the horse’s Beyer Speed Figures suggest they really should take a long look at the Classic.

Hovdey: Like his predecessors, Wise Dan took it to the limit

“Moby-Dick,” the story of obsession and a great white whale, has been in print since 1851. American literature would be considerably less without it.

Sherlock Holmes, the invention of a writer’s mind, first appeared in 1887. The character is as alive today as he was 128 years ago.

“The Phantom of the Opera” opened on Broadway in 1988. More than 11,000 performances later, its story of tragic romance is still going strong.

Jerardi: Pharoah needs to break his Beyer ceiling in Classic

Got an e-mail last week with the subject line “American Phony.’’ I knew the Triple Crown winner had just lost in the Travers, but phony, I thought, might be a bit much.

The writer explained that he was talking about 2015 Beyer Speed Figures, not overall performance. So, it got me thinking: What is the American Pharoah reality as we near the end of the colt’s career?

Hovdey: The present and future shine at Del Mar

It is a function of the fantasy sports culture and its enabling social media that everyone knows what’s right or wrong with everyone else’s business. So it goes with the ups and downs of the racing industry. There seems to be as many stories written about attendance, handle, concession prices, parimutuel takeout, and executive suite shuffles than there are about the horses and people that make the merry-go-round.

Hovdey: Win a Space tries skipping a few grades

American Pharoah will be paraded, applauded, and long gone from the Del Mar stage Sunday afternoon by the time Win the Space is led over for the $250,000 Del Mar Derby. Good thing, too. The gray colt is facing enough of a challenge without experiencing an Arkansas flashback.

Hovdey: American Pharoah and the art of Zen

There is a perception, and rightfully earned, that American Pharoah never gets a moment’s peace, except maybe when he is in the air going from one coast to the other. And we all know how restful air travel can be.
