Hovdey: Old Friends ready for a barn-raising

On the snowy morning of Jan. 23, Michael Blowen was still in his robe waiting for the caffeine to kick in when a voice could be heard outside the farmhouse sounding the worst possible alarm. The barn was on fire.

Hovdey: Songbird the latest beauty in Hollendorfer's harem

Anyone who accomplishes a great deal in the hot glare of the public spotlight is in jeopardy at some point of being typecast. Stripped of context and nuance, an individual will be reduced to his or her most obvious signature on the cultural landscape: Leader of the Free World, Box Office Poison, Short-Fingered Vulgarian.

Trainer of Great Fillies.

Hall of Famer Robert Wheeler was a trainer of fabulous fillies, as anyone who tried to beat Silver Spoon, Bug Brush, Miss Todd, Track Robbery, and Taisez Vous can attest.

Crist: Sunny Ridge born to run in Haskell

If you’re hoping to see the winner of Saturday’s Gotham Stakes in the Kentucky Derby winner’s circle May 7, there are two good reasons to be cautious. First, it has been 43 years since Secretariat became the last Gotham winner to triumph in Louisville. Second, the most accomplished entrant in this year’s edition, Sunny Ridge, is that rarest of all things: a 3-year-old who is almost assured of qualifying for the Derby but whose owner plans to skip the race.

Hovdey: Mo money, Mohaymen could be mo problems

Now that Mohaymen has shattered the illusion that there is a 3-year-old in the East who can do anything about him, it has come time to spend the next month in fervid anticipation of his first true test against divisional champ Nyquist in the Florida Derby.

Sure, these next four weeks will be a challenge to fill with all things Florida Derby. Never fear, though. Racing’s got people with typewriters and Twitter accounts who can chew on one idea like it’s boardwalk taffy, and when it comes to Mohaymen vs. Nyquist, there is plenty to go around. For instance:

Watchmaker: Mohaymen's performance better than it first looked

Barbara D. Livingston
Mohaymen did what he needed to do in his quest to be at his peak on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs.

Call it reading between the lines. Call it interpretation. Call it what you will, but it is something handicappers do a thousand times a day.

Hovdey: Fitzgerald hoping to sound like a winner

The latest chapter of Santa Anita’s search for a full-time announcer to fill the sizable hole left by the departure of Trevor Denman is unfolding this weekend with another very public audition. This time, it will be David Fitzgerald, a 31-year-old Englishman who is in the midst of making a name for himself back home, where he has combined high-profile race calling with interview assignments and analysis.

Good luck to Mr. Fitzgerald, and high marks for his leap into the unknown. You shall be known as Finalist No. 4.

Simon: Bill to clean up horse racing goes nowhere

Those hoping that the federal government would ride to the rescue of racing and rid the game of cheaters through legislative initiative got another dose of reality, wrapped in inertia, on Wednesday. In a move that has not received much publicity, the two sponsors of the Barr-Tonko bill authored a letter that was sent via e-mail to members of the Water Hay Oats Alliance and essentially said that the bill was going nowhere, but they’re still trying.

Hovdey: Even from half a world away, Chrome still glistens

In order to fully appreciate California Chrome’s race in Dubai on Thursday evening, UAE time, it was necessary to perform a few calculations and cultural translations. As breakfast was served, and with more than two hours to post (9:55 a.m. Pacific), there still was plenty of time.

Crist: Many courses on Gulfstream menu

If you’ve been hibernating this winter while waiting for the important racing to start, you really should rouse yourself for Saturday’s 13 races at Gulfstream. Mohaymen in the Fountain of Youth is the obvious headliner, but there are several other highly talented runners well worth watching in the seven other stakes races on the card.

Hovdey: Candidates' stances on racing open to debate

Google “horse race Trump” and it is no surprise that the screen fills with political news, except for a lone Wikipedia citation of Jay Trump, the great American steeplechaser who won the 1965 Grand National at Aintree.

Such is the nearly total appropriation of the term by the political media, which reports daily on the horse race of the current presidential campaign without having a clue as to the nature of the real animals running in the third at Gulfstream Park.
