Jay Hovdey: Comma to the Top makes it add up

Benoit & Associates
Comma to the Top won the 6 1/2-furlong Daytona Stakes in the slop at Santa Anita on Dec. 29.

For those keeping score at home, and you know who you are, the new Kentucky Derby eligibility system kicks into high gear Saturday when the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream and the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds each offers 85 points spread across the first four finishers in a 50-20-10-5 formula that guarantees howls of righteous protest when some poor horse is beaten a dirty nose for the win.

Jay Hovdey: Age hasn't diminished competitive fire in Smith, Stevens

Shigeki Kikkawa
Great Hot, ridden by 49-year-old Gary Stevens, wins the Santa Maria last weekend at Santa Anita.

Just to recap:

Bill Shoemaker turned 47 in August 1978. Two months later, he rode Exceller to victory over Seattle Slew in a Jockey Club Gold Cup for the ages.

On Aug. 26, 1979, one week after celebrating his 48th birthday, Shoemaker climbed aboard Spectacular Bid in an allowance race at Delaware Park. They became inseparable after that, winning 12 of their 13 collaborations over the ensuing 13 months and the title as 1980 Horse of the Year.

Jay Hovdey: Tangled world of equine slaughter

In an admirable display of bipartisan harmony, the Agricultural and Rural Development Committee of the Oklahoma Senate voted 9-0 last Tuesday to approve a bill that would allow for the operation of equine slaughterhouses in the state. The measure was passed without questions or debate.

Steven Crist: Kentucky Derby Future Wager needs fixing

When Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed last Sunday, there was $481,632 bet to win and another $139,861 in the exacta pool, which adds up to $621,493. That may seem like a robust number, but how grand a total is it?

Jay Hovdey: Include Me Out rests now to be fresher for Breeders' Cup in fall

Benoit & Associates
Trainer Ron Ellis says the long-term goal for Include Me Out is this fall's Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic..

There is always a period of chaos that follows the reign of a benevolent leader, or at least that’s what we were taught in Medieval History 101 when considering the vacuum of enlightened rule left by the death of Charlemagne. But what’s that got to do with Rainbow Six?

Jay Hovdey: Compiling Kentucky Derby lists a foolhardy exercise

Barbara D. Livingston
2010 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Uncle Mo is a good recent example of a 3-year-old who was prominent on many early Kentucky Derby lists but failed to deliver.

Each year, when January slides into February and the snow begins to thaw (or not), anyone with a blog, a microphone, or an old-fashioned byline is required by cultural tradition to step forward with their list of Kentucky Derby prospects.

Jay Hovdey: John Nerud - 100 years, lived substantively

Bert Morgan
John Nerud with his Belmont, Travers, and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Gallant Man.

It’s no big deal to live a hundred years. Hundreds have done it. Okay, thousands. In fact, the best estimates put the world’s current population of centenarians at around 300,000, with upward of 70,000 living in the United States, including that guy in Old Brookville, N.Y., who joined the club this weekend.

John Nerud’s attitude about living to be 100 was etched in stone a few years ago when, during an interview, he declared, “There’s damn few people 97, and even fewer 98.”

Dr. Fager: The horse, the name, the stuff of legend

Dr. Fager, here in his historic win in the 1968 Washington Park Handicap, was named after Charles Fager, the brain surgeon who saved John Nerud’s life.

Phone log excerpt from Jan. 30, 2013:

“Hello?”

“Hello, may I speak to Dr. Fager?”

“One minute, please.”

Pause.

“Hello?”

“Hello, Dr. Fager?”

OK, hold on. At this point it is important to reassure worried readers that your reality-based correspondent has not descended into one of those anthropomorphic flights of fancy in which Seabiscuit answers his fan mail, or Secretariat offers a blow-by-blow account of his Belmont Stakes, or Zenyatta muses on the manhood of Bernardini.
