Sunset Glory won her stakes debut in the CTT-TOC Stakes on turf at Del Mar on Friday.

DEL MAR, Calif. - The rapid development of Sunset Glory from maiden winner in April to minor stakes winner at Del Mar last Friday will lead to an appearance in a graded stakes this fall.

The Grade 2 Rodeo Drive Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 5 is considered a realistic goal for Sunset Glory, who won her stakes debut in the CTT-TOC Stakes at 1 3/8 miles on turf at Del Mar on Friday for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Bruce Treitman and trainer Michael McCarthy.

Sweet Azteca won the Great Lady M by five lengths last month in her last start.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Grade 1 winner Sweet Azteca will stay home this weekend to run for a $100,000 purse in the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar rather than ship to Saratoga for a shot at a $500,000 purse in the Grade 1 Ballerina on Saturday at Saratoga.

“We gave a lot of thought to going back there,” trainer Michael McCarthy said Sunday. “I think, ultimately, the difference was the Breeders’ Cup is held here (Del Mar) in November.”

Anarchist to skip Pat O'Brien for bigger purse in South Korea

Barbara D. Livingston
Anarchist was fifth in his last start, the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Anarchist, winner of the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Handicap a year ago at Del Mar, has a bigger purse to aim for rather than defend his title in the sprint scheduled for Saturday.

Instead, the 5-year-old is headed to South Korea for the Group 3, $1 million Korea Sprint on Sept. 8 at Seoul Racecourse. After a sharp workout Sunday at Del Mar under jockey Edwin Maldonado, trainer Doug O’Neill said it is full speed ahead to South Korea.

Anarchist worked five furlongs in 1:00. But it was the way he did it that impressed O’Neill and Maldonado.

Rich Strike, the 2022 Kentucky Derby winner, has suffered another setback in his longshot attempt to make it back to the races and his future will likely be determined in the next 60 days, owner Rick Dawson said Sunday.

Rich Strike, who had spent the last two months in Saratoga and had four workouts under the tutelage of trainer Bill Mott, has a new injury to his left foreleg, Dawson said. The horse will be on medication for a 30-day period and then, following another 30 days off medication, an ultrasound will be performed to determine how the issue is healing, Dawson said.
