J.G. Torrealba is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding apprentice jockey of 2024 after building his résumé by winning races from Maryland to Ohio to Southern California.

But the road the 22-year-old native of Arlington, Texas, took to the top of North America’s apprentice ranks was a tad unconventional. He is now an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding apprentice jockey of 2024.

Cinderella’s Dream arrived in the United States in early summer less than two months after the first loss of her career, a seventh-place finish in the Group 1 English 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse in early May.

Owned by Brookdale Racing, Mark Edwards, breeder Judy Hicks, and the Magdalena Racing syndicate of McPeek and his wife, Sherri, Thorpedo Anna was the country’s most accomplished stakes winner.

Someday the Eclipse Award for outstanding 3-year-old filly may be won by a filly who runs only on grass. When it does finally happen, the Eclipse winner’s campaign may be similar to the 2024 campaign of She Feels Pretty, who also is a finalist as outstanding turf female.
