Nitrogen, Vixen, Mi Bago point to Kentucky

Nitrogen (left) earned a career-best 86 Beyer Speed Figure for Saturday's victory in the Florida Oaks.

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Mark Casse has done a terrific job keeping his two 3-year-old turf fillies Nitrogen and Vixen apart this winter and they have combined to win four stakes races. Now they are likely to wind up in the same races with both aiming at the Grade 2, $500,000 Appalachian Stakes on April 5 followed by the Grade 2, $600,000 Edgewood on May 2.

“Our hopes and plans were for them to meet there, that was one of the reasons we separated them early on,” said Casse, who trains both fillies for D J Stable. “[The Appalachian] is a huge race, it leads to the Edgewood.”

Pat Day Mile or Kentucky Derby? That's the question for Owen Almighty

Tom Keyser
Owen Almighty earned a career-best 92 Beyer Speed Figure for Saturday’s win in the Tampa Bay Derby.

OLDSMAR, Fla. - When it comes time to sit down with his owners to discuss future plans for Tampa Bay Derby winner Owen Almighty, trainer Brian Lynch will have plenty of evidence to make his case for running him in the Grade 2, $600,000 Pat Day Mile instead of the $5 million Kentucky Derby at 1 1/4 miles at Churchill Downs on May 3.

But will it be enough to cure that sometimes dreaded disease known as Derby Fever?

Barbara D. Livingston
The five-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival to be held June 4-8 will include 27 stakes.

The stakes program for the Belmont at Aqueduct spring/summer meet, to be conducted in three parts, will have a somewhat different look to it in 2025.

Despite the fact eight stakes were furloughed for this year - including the Grade 2 Brooklyn - there will be 55 stakes worth $17.25 million offered over 37 cards from May 1 through July 6 compared to 56 stakes worth $16.85 million in 2024.

Of those 37 racing programs, 28 will be held at Aqueduct and nine at Saratoga.

Legendary track announcer Denman announces retirement

Benoit Photo
Denman moved to California from South Africa in 1983 and initially working the fall Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita.

Every race fan has a favorite phrase made popular by track announcer Trevor Denman, who announced his retirement on Thursday from calling the action at the Del Mar summer meetings.

If your pick was “moving like a winner,” rest assured there would be a payoff.

Opening day at Del Mar each July had a common phrase to describe the start of the first race: “There’s the roar from the crowd.”

There always was a hearty cheer from an enthusiastic crowd.

Sierra Leone came up a nose short of giving Chad Brown a Derby win in 2024. He sends out his top prospect this year on Saturday.

INDIANTOWN, Fla. – Three times in the last seven years, as the field turned into the stretch of the Kentucky Derby, trainer Chad Brown thought his horses were in position to win the race.

It wasn’t to be.

In 2018, Good Magic had to settle for second, 2 1/2 lengths behind Justify. In 2022, the late-running Zandon couldn’t see out the 1 1/4 miles and finished third, 1 1/2 lengths behind longshot winner Rich Strike.

Then, in 2024, Sierra Leone couldn’t maintain a straight course through the stretch and fell a nose short of the rail-skimming Mystik Dan.

Kentucky Derby 2025: After Risen Star dud, East Avenue a forgotten horse

Susie Raisher
East Avenue (farthest right) stumbled out of the gate in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, losing all chance. He had no excuse, however, for his poor effort in the Risen Star, his first 2025 start.

East Avenue came into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile the first weekend in November looking like the leading member of his generation. Coming into the second weekend of March, his generation less than two months away from their turn at the Kentucky Derby, East Avenue essentially has fallen off the radar.

Kentucky Derby 2025: Gaming pointed to Virginia Derby

Debra A. Roma
Gaming, who goes next in the Virginia Derby on March 15, comes off a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes, his 3-year-old debut.

Gaming, who finished eighth in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn in his 3-year-old debut, will make his next start in the $500,000 Virginia Derby on March 15 at Colonial Downs, trainer Bob Baffert said.

“It’s a mile and an eighth, one turn, we’ll give him one more crack at it,” said Baffert, who has Irad Ortiz Jr. to ride. “The Oaklawn race was horrendous. He didn’t get anything out of that. He’s come back and worked well.”
