LOUISVILLE, Ky.-  Brotherly love goes only so far.

Jockey Jose Ortiz and his brother Irad were both looking for their first Kentucky Derby victory when they came charging down the center of the track under the Twin Spires on Saturday. They drove their respective mounts, Golden Tempo and Renegade, toward the wire in the final stages of the race, but ultimately only one could achieve that goal - at the expense of the other.

Kentucky Derby 2026: Commandment, So Happy co-favorites in mid-day betting

So Happy was the 5-1 co-favorite in early betting for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday afternoon.

Commandment and So Happy have replaced Renegade as the early co-favorites for the Kentucky Derby, according to parimutuel pool data reviewed at 2 p.m. Eastern.

Renegade, winner of the Arkansas Derby in his last start, was the morning-line favorite for the Derby from Churchill oddsmakers and the second choice on the line made by Daily Racing Form’s David Aragona. While he was 5-1 throughout the early hours of the pool on Friday and Saturday morning, he drifted to 6-1 early Saturday afternoon, with Commandment and So Happy dropping to 5-1.

Kentucky Oaks 2026: Betting handle soars to record $29.2 million

Total wagering handle on the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Friday night surged to a record $29.2 million, up 29.1 percent from 2025. Betting was up significantly in the straight wagering pools and in the pools for bets that linked the Oaks with races earlier on the card, according to charts.

Churchill simulcast signal restored at Hawthorne

The agreement between Hawthorne and Churchill Downs Inc. means Chicago-area horseplayers will be able to wager on the Kentucky Derby and Oaks cards.

Hawthorne Racecourse in Stickney, Ill., and Churchill Downs Inc. have reached an agreement to restore CDI’s signals to Hawthorne and its Chicago-area off-track betting parlors, according to officials for both tracks.

The agreement, which had been scuttled last year after Hawthorne began running debts to simulcast companies due to financial difficulties, was approved on Thursday by a bankruptcy judge handling Hawthorne’s Chapter 11 filing, according to David McCaffrey, the executive director of the Illinois Horsemen’s Thoroughbred Association.

Kentucky Derby 2026: McPeek unhappy with Right to Party vet scratch; Robusta joins field

Regulatory veterinarians told trainer Kenny McPeek Right to Party was lame in his right front. McPeek believes the horse is good to go.

LOUISVILLE, KY. – Right to Party, runner-up in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial, was scratched from Saturday’s Kentucky Derby due to lameness in his right foreleg, opening a spot for Robusta to join the field. 

Right to Party was the third horse to be scratched from the Kentucky Derby since entries were taken on April 25. Scratched earlier in the week were Silent Tactic (bruised foot) and Fulleffort (chip in hind ankle). Those drawing in from the also-eligible list when those horses scratched were Great White and Ocelli.

Kentucky Oaks: Scratch of Nycon leaves expected field of 13

Nycon, fourth in the Gazelle, scratched from the Kentucky Oaks according to trainer Whit Beckman.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Nycon was scratched from tonight's Kentucky Oaks on the morning of the race, leaving a field of 13 to contest the filly classic. 

Trainer Whit Beckman said Friday morning that there is no injury or real physical issue with Nycon, who was most recently fourth in the Grade 3 Gazelle Stakes. He said in recent days he had noticed some "inconsistencies" with the filly's gait which prompted him to take the conservative route.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – They’ve all felt the swirling winds of the hurricane, whether it was Riley Mott on the track as an assistant to his Kentucky Derby-winning father, a young Cherie DeVaux galloping beneath the twin spires, or riders piloting winners before a roaring Churchill Downs crowd on the Derby undercard.

Now, they’re in the eye of the storm. Accounting for the shape of the field as of Friday morning, as many as four trainers and seven jockeys are looking to make their Kentucky Derby debuts on Saturday.
