HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla - The celebrations were long over and it was back to business as usual Sunday morning at Gulfstream Park for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and his staff. The team sent out nearly 20 horses to breeze during the morning, including the recently anointed Filly and Mare Sprint champion Soul of an Angel, who cruised an easy half-mile in a pedestrian 51.78 seconds over the main track shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Take Charge Milady points to Honeybee as next start

Take Charge Milady was given an 84 Beyer Speed Figure for the victory in the Martha Washington.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Take Charge Milady will likely continue on the Oaklawn Park road to the Kentucky Oaks following her Saturday win in the track’s $300,000 Martha Washington, trainer Kenny McPeek said Sunday.

Take Charge Milady now ranks second on the Kentucky Oaks points list after picking up 20 points for her Martha Washington win. She has initially emerged from the race in good order, McPeek said.

“We’ll probably come back in the Honeybee, and then go from there, then either Fantasy or Ashland,” he said of the potential campaign for Take Charge Milady.

Northern California horsemen make plans to move barns out of Pleasanton

“It’s pretty bleak and pretty disappointing for our horsemen here,” trainer Blaine Wright said of the situation at Pleasanton.

Concerned about the long-term prospects of racing in Northern California, several leading trainers are planning to move their stables away from the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, the venue that most recently conducted racing in that part of the state.

James E. ‘Ted' Bassett, titan of Keeneland and racing industry, dead at 103

Ted Bassett was with Keeneland for 36 years and served as president and chairman during its greatest expansion.

James E. “Ted” Bassett, a towering but genteel figure whose work at Keeneland brought the racetrack and sales company to new heights during a 36-year tenure at the association, died on Thursday at his home in Lexington, according to Keeneland. Bassett was 103.

Eclipse Award an emotional win for Asmussen family

Erik Asmussen won the Eclipse Award for apprentice jockey in 2024, the same award his uncle Cash won in 1979.

It was an emotional night for the Asmussen family as Erik Asmussen, the son of Hall of Fame trainer Steve, was named champion apprentice jockey.

Erik Asmussen teared up on stage during his acceptance speech and tears were in the eyes of his parents, Steve and Julie, in a photo taken just outside the ballroom at the Breakers Resort. Erik’s grandparents, Keith, a former jockey, and Marilyn, were also at the ceremony.

Brown caps best year with fifth Eclipse Award

Trainer Chad Brown won 15 Grade 1 races in 2024 en route to his fifth Eclipse Award.

Statistically, trainer Chad Brown may have had better years, but he called 2024 his best year yet.

Brown won his fifth Eclipse Award as champion trainer, narrowly defeating Kenny McPeek, 101 to 88. McPeek was the first trainer in 72 years to win the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby in the same year and he campaigned Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna, the Oaks and Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner.

Seven Eclipse winners expected back for 2025 campaigns

Soul of an Angel is one of seven Eclipse winners that are expected to return in 2025 and may start in the Saudi World Cup.

Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna is one of seven 2024 Eclipse Award winners expected to run in 2025.

Sierra Leone, champion 3-year-old male, has had three workouts this winter at Payson Park and is being considered for the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 22.

Last Sunday, Sierra Leone worked a half-mile in 49.40 seconds. He is scheduled to work again this Sunday.

“His last work was a big jump forward, he worked really strongly, he got a lot out of it,” trainer Chad Brown said. “We’ll know more in the next couple of weeks if he’s going to make that race.”

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Around eight hours after she was crowned 2024 Horse of the Year, Thorpedo Anna had her first official workout Friday morning at Gulfstream Park as she continues preparations for her 2025 campaign.

Around 5:45 a.m. on a rather dreary morning in South Florida, Thorpedo Anna went three furlongs in 35.75 seconds over Gulfstream’s main track, according to track clockers. Trainer Kenny McPeek said it was a good first step on the way to Thorpedo Anna’s 4-year-old debut which could happen in the Grade 2, $400,000 Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 8.

Edward L. Bowen, horse racing journalist and historian, dies at age 82

In addition to his career as a journalist, Edward Bowen served in key roles for the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

Edward L. Bowen, the prolific author and editor who for decades chronicled and celebrated the horses and personalities of the sport of racing, died on Monday at his home in Versailles, Ky., according to friends. Bowen was 82.

An author of 22 books on racing and a journalist and historian of the sport for six decades, Bowen played pivotal roles in curating the history of racing through his written works and his chairmanship of the Hall of Fame Nominating Committee at the National Museum of Racing since 1987.
