Sandman, with 129 Derby points, leaves Monday for Churchill Downs

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Sandman developed into a serious racehorse over the winter at Oaklawn Park and, after exiting his Saturday win in the Arkansas Derby in good order, will leave Monday for Churchill Downs to begin preparations for the Kentucky Derby, according to trainer Mark Casse.

Sierra Leone finished third in the New Orleans Classic at Fair Grounds on March 22.

Sierra Leone, the reigning 3-year-old champion male, came out of his third-place finish in the Grade 2 New Orleans Classic on March 22 in good order, said trainer Chad Brown, who added that he does not have a definitive next spot picked out.

In his first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar last November, Sierra Leone was beaten 4 1/2 lengths by Touchuponastar in the New Orleans Classic.

Moira nominated to three Group 1 races in Australia

Moira won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar last November for trainer Kevin Attard.

Moira, the champion turf female of 2024, has been nominated to three Group 1 races in Australia in early April.

Moira won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar last November for trainer Kevin Attard. Two days later, Moira was listed as sold for $4.3 million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in Kentucky.

Sent to Australia following the sale, Moira is owned by Yu Long Investments and based with Chris Waller, annually one of Australia’s leading trainers.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – They’ve only conducted one Kentucky Derby this century – and none in the last 21 years – in which Todd Pletcher didn’t have a runner. The Hall of Fame trainer hopes this year won’t be the second.

Despite leading all trainers in 3-year-olds nominated to the Triple Crown (32), Pletcher enters the final round of Kentucky Derby qualifying races without a horse among the top 20 in points.

Kentucky Derby 2025: Luxor Cafe looks to maintain points lead in Japan's Fukuryu Stakes

Led by the Kentucky-bred colt Luxor Cafe, 15 3-year-olds have been nominated for Saturday’s Fukuryu Stakes at Nayakama Racecourse, the final race of the Japanese qualifying series for the Kentucky Derby.

The Fukuryu Stakes is run at 1 1/8 miles, a distance that many of the nominees have already tried.

Luxor Cafe, by American Pharoah, has had five starts and has won his last three starts in a maiden race at a mile at Tokyo last November, an allowance race at 1 1/8 miles at Nayakama on Jan. 11, and the Hyacinth Stakes at a mile at Tokyo on Feb. 23.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Striker Has Dial validated her first-level allowance win on Jan. 25 with a second-level allowance victory Saturday at Aqueduct, highlighting a four-win weekend for trainer Horacio De Paz. 

Both wins for Striker Has Dial have come at six furlongs and with a minimum of six weeks between races. Striker Has Dial earned a 95 Beyer Speed Figure for her win Saturday, following a 97 Beyer for her Jan. 25 victory.

Rice closing on third consecutive trainer's title at Aqueduct

Linda Rice is in position to capture her third consecutive winter meet trainer’s title at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Linda Rice won four races at Aqueduct on Jan. 2, a day that set the tone for her winter in New York. 

Entering the final week of racing for the three-month winter meet, Rice has 48 wins, 31 more than her nearest rival, Rick Dutrow. Through 43 cards of racing, Rice has started 201 horses and has had 39 individual horses win. That includes La Banquera, a horse Rice claimed for $25,000 last November who has won three times this year by a combined 20 1/2 lengths and might be stakes-bound for her next start.

CYPRESS, Calif. - More than $560,000 in purses from two major Quarter Horse stakes at Los Alamitos last fall were ordered redistributed by track stewards on Saturday after a runner in each race tested positive for a prohibited medication.

American Dreamin, winner of the $1.04 million Golden State Million Futurity on Oct. 27, and Ab Seis Corazones, second in the $763,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby on Nov. 10, tested positive for carmoterol, a bronchodilator not permitted to appear in post-race test.
