Xy Speed, a 9-year-old gelding trained by Michael Lerman, will break from the rail in the eighth race Thursday at Gulfstream Park, a $58,000 turf allowance. The five-furlong race will be an opportunity for him to bounce back from a handicap defeat in early April that Lerman believes the gelding should have won if not for a brutal trip.
“We’re just trying to put all that behind us last time, otherwise he would have another win,” Lerman said. “He’s doing very well. He’s as classy and happy a 9-year-old as can be.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –The California contingent to this year’s Kentucky Derby is a small but potent one, led by morning-line favorite Journalism. The group also includes reigning juvenile champion Citizen Bull, Wood Memorial winner Rodriguez, and Santa Anita Derby runner-up Baeza, who still needs a late scratch to draw into the 20-horse field.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – He used to be anxious about it. Then he got defensive. Now, Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen seems somewhat philosophical about the fact he has yet to win the Kentucky Derby.
Asmussen, North America’s winningest trainer with 10,861 career victories, has started 26 horses in 18 runnings of the Kentucky Derby. He has three seconds and two thirds.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The waiting is the hardest part.
The connections of Baeza will be waiting to hear if there is a defection from the Kentucky Derby between now and scratch time – 9 a.m. Friday – to learn if their horse gets to run in the $5 million classic at Churchill Downs.
ARCADIA, Calif. - In his 35th start at Santa Anita on Saturday, Midnight Mammoth won for the eighth time in an allowance race at 1 1/16 miles, recording a 6-1 upset.
The surprise victory is likely to lead to an appearance in the Grade 2 Hollywood Gold Cup on May 26. With a purse of $200,000, the Gold Cup at 1 1/4 miles is the leading dirt race of the Santa Anita spring meeting.
“That’s the plan,” trainer Craig Dollase said on Sunday.
Dollase said he was encouraged that Midnight Mammoth stalked Eagles Flight to the turn before taking command.
ARCADIA, Calif. - In the last month, the 4-year-old filly Public Assembly has gone from a maiden race winner to a contender in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita on May 26.
Bought for $225,000 at Keeneland last November, Public Assembly won her California debut in an allowance race at 1 1/4 miles on turf on March 30 in her first start of 2025, and followed with a win in her first start in a stakes in Saturday’s Grade 3 Royal Heroine Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on turf.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Anybody looking for one last opportunity to knock the Derby favorite likely came away disappointed after Santa Anita Derby winner Journalism turned in his final major prep shortly after the renovation break Sunday at Churchill Downs.
Jimmy Jerkens, a multiple Grade 1 stakes-winning trainer who recently returned to the U.S. after a two-year stint in Saudi Arabia, has taken a job as an assistant to Kenny McPeek, who plans to maintain a year-round operation in New York beginning this spring.
McPeek, who maintains a strong Kentucky division as well, announced the move in a video posted on X Sunday afternoon.
