Disco Time, Tappan Street get good position in Pegasus World Cup draw

Disco Time will be the 8-5 morning-line favorite for the Pegasus World Cup, with Tappan Street listed at 6-1.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Brad Cox will hold the upper hand when he sends out the undefeated Disco Time and Florida Derby winner Tappan Street against 10 rivals in Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park.

The 10th running of the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus World Cup will highlight an outstanding 13-race program that also features the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf and $500,000 Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Authorities seize Santa Anita's Racing on Demand machines

The Department of Justice seized 26 slot-style parimutuel gaming machines at Santa Anita. The machines had been installed on Thursday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Approximately 25 law enforcement officers seized Santa Anita’s recently introduced slot-styled parimutuel gaming machines late Saturday afternoon.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, with one race remaining on the nine-race program, officers wearing California Department of Justice uniforms arrived at a small grandstand pavilion where the 26 machines were based, observers said.

The machines were ordered turned off. In the next hour, officers began to transport the machines onto a U-Haul truck and an unmarked van parked in the track’s garden.

NYRA updates Franchise Oversight Board on Belmont Park progress

In an attempt to lure out-of-state stables to New York once Belmont Park reopens, NYRA is planning to build 15 efficiency apartments on the grounds for assistant trainers to use.

The New York Racing Association plans to build 15 efficiency apartments on the grounds of Belmont Park dedicated for use by assistant trainers in a bid to attract out-of-state outfits to New York when downstate racing shifts to one facility later this year. 

The plan was part of NYRA’s capital budget presented and approved Friday during a 90-minute Franchise Oversight Board (FOB) meeting held in Schenectady. The hope is that the new housing will be built by the third quarter of 2026.

After late change in plans, California Board pushes NoCal dates discussion to February

Under a proposal by Bernal Park Racing Management Company, Northern California fair racing in 2026 would be held at Pleasanton (above), Red Bluff, and Ferndale.

The California Horse Racing Board on Wednesday postponed the possible allocation of 2026 racing dates at three fairs in Northern California until a special meeting in February, pending the resolution of legal issues and greater involvement from fair officials.

Rodriguez should be back in action next week

Free Like a Girl euthanized following trailer incident

Free Like a Girl won 19 stakes during her career. She is the all-time leading Louisiana-bred with mnore than $2.5 million in earnings.

Free Like a Girl, who rose from a $5,500 yearling purchase to the all-time leading earner among Louisiana-breds, recently had to be euthanized due to a severe hind leg injury sustained inside a trailer, according to co-owner Carl Deville.

Free Like a Girl was retired from racing this fall and was scheduled to be bred this year to Into Mischief. She earned $2,565,628 during her career and continues to lead all Louisiana-breds in earnings.

Bowen to be posthumously honored with Eclipse Award of Merit

In 2025, Ed Bowen was named to both the Media Roll of Honor and the Pillars of the Turf by the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Ed Bowen, the longtime racing historian, author, and journalist who died in January 2025, will be posthumously awarded the Eclipse Award of Merit in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding achievement in the Thoroughbred industry, it was announced Tuesday.

Bowen will be celebrated at the Eclipse Awards ceremony on Jan. 22 at The Breakers Palm Beach in Florida.

Trainer Rudy Rodriguez, after agreeing to a number of conditions set by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, can resume working, entering, and racing his horses beginning on Thursday.

A provisional suspension handed trainer Rudy Rodriguez on Dec. 16 for allegations he endangered the welfare of horses in his care has been lifted by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) and Rodriguez is now permitted to work, enter, and race horses beginning Thursday.

Ted Noffey individual favorite at 6-1 in third Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool

In the second pool, which closed on Dec. 1, “all others” closed as the 2-1 favorite, while Ted Noffey was the individual betting favorite at 7-1.

Ted Noffey, the undefeated winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, has been made the 6-1 individual favorite in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool, which opens on Friday.

Ted Noffey, who has yet to record a published workout in 2026, is one of 39 individual betting interests being offered in the pool, which opens at noon Eastern on Friday and closes at 6 p.m. Sunday. “All others” was made the 4-1 favorite.

Further Ado, winner of the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in November, and Paladin, winner of the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes on Dec. 6, are both listed at 10-1.
