Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: Imprimis would kill for a Florida orange

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Imprimis was a graded stakes winner at Keeneland this season and won his most recent outing in September at Kentucky Downs, but trainer Joe Orseno was in no hurry to ship the gelding from his Florida base back to the Bluegrass State to prepare for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. In addition to getting to remain in his regular routine for longer, Imprimis enjoys a specific local luxury.

Breeders' Cup Mile: Casa Creed, Lope Y Fernandez expect to draw in from also-eligible list

Coady Photography
Casa Creed gets into the Breeders' Cup Mile because of the defection of Beau Recall.

Beau Recall wasn’t expected to be entered in the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Monday as her connections have opted to point toward a less challenging race.

Trainer Brad Cox said Sunday that Beau Recall would be redirected toward the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes on Nov. 29 at Del Mar. Beau Recall also is entered in Keeneland’s November sale as hip No. 194 scheduled to go to auction on Nov. 9. Her racing future hinges on the results of that sale, Cox said.

Breeders' Cup Distaff: Keeneland a neutral site for Monomoy Girl, Swiss Skydiver matchup

Barbara D. Livingston
Swiss Skydiver trains at a chilly Keeneland on Monday. In her lone start at the Lexington track, she finished second to Art Collector in the Blue Grass Stakes in July.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – There will be no home-court advantage when Monomoy Girl faces Swiss Skydiver in their eagerly awaited matchup Saturday in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Keeneland.

Although both are very well-traveled, both are quite familiar with the local surface. Before their racing careers even began, both had their first timed workout at Keeneland – Monomoy Girl on June 14, 2017, and Swiss Skydiver on May 30, 2019 – and both have raced over the track once apiece.

Breeders' Cup week weather looks ideal; should be fast and firm both days

Barbara D. Livingston
The forecast calls for dry weather with a high in the mid-60s Friday and lower 70s Saturday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Unlucky with the coronavirus – but lucky with the weather.

All indications are that conditions will be ideal when Keeneland hosts the 37th Breeders’ Cup this weekend without spectators. Despite this being a time of year in Kentucky when rain and/or cold are not uncommon, the forecast throughout this week calls for no precipitation, with sunshine and high temperatures of 66 being predicted for Friday and 72 for Saturday.

McCarthy's rise from groom to Breeders' Cup trainer a Cinderella story

Barbara D. Livingston
Michael McCarthy has four horses for the Breeders’ Cup: Rombauer, Speech, Rushie, and Ce Ce.

ARCADIA, Calif. – In the nearly seven years since he went out on his own with just a single horse, trainer Michael McCarthy has built up one of the strongest barns on the West Coast. And though he’s won plenty of significant races, including the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and Pegasus World Cup with City of Light, his current group might be his deepest yet.

Rushing Fall, Sistercharlie turn in final works at Belmont as BC nears

Susie Raisher
Sistercharlie (inside) and Rushing Fall work on the inner turf course at Belmont on Sunday.

ELMONT, N.Y. - On a morning when Chad Brown worked 68 horses, there was one in-company breeze that stood out to the four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer. And it had nothing to do with the final time of the breeze.

As Rushing Fall and Sistercharlie broke into their gallop before they would work a half-mile over Belmont Park’s inner turf course, Brown, watching from the box seats on the second floor, said, “This is it, last breeze for us. Time flies.”

LEXINGTON, Ky. - It was pretty much the Bill Mott and Steve Asmussen show over the main track at Keeneland on Sunday, with the two Hall of Fame trainers emptying their barns of Breeders’ Cup contenders, who worked under clear, cool skies while fighting a pretty strong crosswind.

Beau Recall won't enter BC Mile, points to Matriarch Stakes

Emily Shields
Beau Recall, ridden by Manny Franco, pulls away from Newspaperofrecord to win the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile.

Trainer Brad Cox said Sunday that the mare Beau Recall wouldn’t be entered Monday in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Beau Recall, most recently a fine second in the First Lady Stakes at Keeneland, was part of the main body of the Mile when pre-entries were released last week, and her defection allows Casa Creed, who was the first pre-entered horse not selected into the race, to get into the Mile. Trainer Bill Mott said Sunday that Casa Creed would be entered.

Cox said Beau Recall is being pointed to the Matriarch Stakes rather than the BC Mile.

Improbable leads deep Baffert team for Breeders' Cup Classic

Emily Shields
Improbable wins the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Improbable is a predictable colt in morning workouts. Chances are he is going to produce a quick time.

Improbable worked six furlongs in 1:11.40 on Sunday at Santa Anita in his final major exercise before the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday. The winner of three consecutive Grade 1 races since early June, Improbable is scheduled to be flown to Kentucky early Tuesday.
