2021 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Echo Zulu, Grace Adler look to maintain status

Barbara D. Livingston
Echo Zulu, winner of the Grade 1 Spinaway, will stretch out to a mile in Sunday's Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont Park.

Some Breeders’ Cup races are easier to get a line on than others. Typically, the $2 million BC Juvenile Fillies is not one of them, at least not at this early juncture.

The reason: Three critical Win and You’re In preps still remain, and the results of those will go a long way in determining a pecking order of favoritism for the 38th Juvenile Fillies, to be run at 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

Those races are the 1 1/16-mile Chandelier on Friday at Santa Anita; the one-mile Frizette on Sunday at Belmont Park; and the 1 1/16-mile Alcibiades on Oct. 8 at Keeneland.

2021 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Gamine a towering presence

Debra A. Roma
Gamine's season goal is to win the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint for a second straight year.

Gamine, Gamine, Gamine. A thousand times, Gamine.

That’s the name everyone will be saying and hearing as the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint draws closer. As a 6 1/4-length winner of this race last fall at Keeneland with a 110 Beyer Speed Figure and the reigning leader atop the filly-mare sprint division since then, there’s little doubt Gamine is the one to beat in the seven-furlong Filly and Mare Sprint. She is the even-money favorite on the early Daily Racing Form line composed by Brad Free among known prospects for the Nov. 6 race at Del Mar.

2021 Breeders' Cup Distaff: Letruska goes from late developer to leader of the pack

Barbara D. Livingston
Letruska was given a 101 Beyer Speed Figure for the triumph in the Personal Ensign at Saratoga on Saturday.

It seems odd to label Letruska as a late developer. After all, she began her career 7 for 7, and won 11 of her first 15 starts including Group 1s in Mexico City and Grade 3s in the United States.

But this year at age 5, Letruska did change, from above average to exceptional, winning graded stakes at four tracks including three Grade 1s. Late developer? Perhaps. As for her label this fall – Letruska is the early favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 6 at Del Mar, listed at 2-1 on the preliminary line by Daily Racing Form.

Imprimis to have another throat surgery

Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Imprimis will undergo a second throat procedure. Plans call for him to race next year at age 8.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Joe Orseno’s goal all season was to get Imprimis back to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint after he lost all chance a year ago in the race due to a very unlucky trip at Keeneland. But those plans have been shelved, with Imprimis back in Ocala where he was scheduled to undergo another throat surgery Monday.

Life Is Good, Mind Control likely to try BC Dirt Mile

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Life Is Good beats older horses in the Kelso by 5 1/2 lengths. Todd Pletcher could opt for the BC Dirt Mile over the BC Classic.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Todd Pletcher could have two top contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 6 at Del Mar after weekend stakes victories by Life Is Good and Mind Control.

Life Is Good did what was expected of him in Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Kelso Handicap when he scored a 5 1/2-length front-running victory as the 1-20 favorite.

Mind Control won for the first time around two turns when he battled back after being passed by Silver State to capture the Parx Dirt Mile by a head.

Shirreffs sticking to same pattern with Del Mar Handicap upsetter Astronaut

Emily Shields
Astronaut came into the Del Mar Handicap following a two-month layoff and will head into the Breeders' Cup off a similar break.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Astronaut, the lightly raced Shirreffs trainee who earned a fees-paid berth to the BC Turf by winning the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap on Aug. 21 at Del Mar, will train into the Breeders’ Cup rather than shorten to a mile and one-quarter in the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship on Oct. 2 at Santa Anita.

Edgeway will go into Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint without a prep race

Emily Shields
Edgeway wins the Aug. 20 Rancho Bernardo by one length. She will go straight to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 6.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Edgeway will be up against it facing one of the most heavily favored runners of the 2021 Breeders’ Cup, but trainer John Sadler will take his best shot by sending Edgeway into the Filly and Mare Sprint as a fresh filly.

Sadler acknowledged that, at least on paper, “nobody can beat Gamine. But who’s in the second tier? – Frank’s Rockette, Edgeway, maybe Kimari. I’m going to train [Edgeway] into the Breeders’ Cup. She does well with spacing.”
