Despite a loose shoe, Ain't Easy blows 'em away in Chandelier Stakes

Emily Shields
Ain't Easy took command of the Chandelier with an inside move on the far turn. She earned a fees-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Ain’t Easy tried to put her best foot forward on Friday at Santa Anita. She won in a romp in the Grade 2 Chandelier. Imagine what she could do with all her shoes properly affixed.

Ain’t Easy crossed the wire 4 3/4 lengths in front of the nearest of her six rivals in the $201,000 race for 2-year-old fillies, and returned with her left front shoe askew. Her trainer, Phil D’Amato, made sure to instruct his employees to get it pulled at the test barn, by which time some of her rivals might have caught up to her.

Juan Hernandez urges Mackinnon to victory in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf.

When Mackinnon left the winner’s circle after the Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 6, trainer Doug O’Neill said the main objective for the autumn was the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf there on Nov. 5 with the possibility of no races in between.

Mackinnon will not go that long between races.

Sunday, Mackinnon will start with an excellent chance for a third consecutive win, when he runs in the $200,000 Zuma Beach Stakes for 2-year-olds at a mile on turf at Santa Anita.

Zenyatta Stakes a puzzler for horsemen, horseplayers

Emily Shields
As Time Goes By will be looking to bounce back from a pair of disappointing efforts in Sunday’s Grade 2 Zenyatta Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A baffling edition of the Zenyatta Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita may determine if the home team is represented in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar, or if this year’s Distaff is for visitors only.

A field of eight – seven California locals and one Midwest shipper – entered the Grade 2 Zenyatta, a BC Distaff Win and You’re In and a confounding race for both horsemen and horseplayers.

Awesome Again a race with more questions than answers

Benoit Photo
Front-running Medina Spirit will face older rivals for the first time in the Awesome Again Stakes after Bob Baffert scratched him from last week’s Pennsylvania Derby.

The Awesome Again, as Winston Churchill once famously described Russia, is “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.” The race is named for a horse who never ran at Santa Anita, and once you ponder that you can move on to the germane questions for this year’s race, such as:

Can the 3-year-old Medina Spirit step up and beat older horses?

Can Tripoli continue his newfound glory now that he’s moved to dirt?

Can Tizamagician be as effective turning back to 1 1/8 miles as he is at 1 1/4 miles, and particularly beyond?
