F&M Turf: Chaste has defied the odds

ELMONT, N.Y. - Chaste will be among the longshots in Saturday's $1 million Filly and Mare Turf, but considering what she has been through, she beat even longer odds just to make it into the race.

Chaste, a 5-year-old, has suffered two condylar fractures of her left hind pastern during her career. The first occurred during her 2-year-old year and resulted in a 15-month layoff, and the second came during the winter of her 3-year-old campaign. It required surgery and cost her another year on the sidelines.

Sprint: Look of a live longshot

ELMONT, N.Y. - After Saturday's Breeders' Cup, many trainers will say goodbye to horses who are embarking on new careers in the breeding shed, but there is at least one trainer with a Breeders' Cup starter who will be fully involved in his horse's stud career.

Beau Greely, who trains Five Star Day, a starter in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint, and his brother John Greely IV will stand the sprinter next year at Wintergreen Stallion Station, a farm they opened this year in Midway, Ky.

Workout report 10/23: Impressive final prep for Exogenous

ELMONT, N Y - A late change in plans from Team Godolphin, who moved up Fantastic Light and Sakhee's final Breeders' Cup works 24 hours, highlighted Tuesday morning's training session at Belmont Park where the skies were overcast but the temperatures remained unseasonably mild. Both the main track and turf course were once again in excellent condition.

Classic: Sakhee, 'Light' prep for ?

ELMONT, N.Y. - The Breeders' Cup has changed its name to the World Thoroughbred Championships, and appropriately, this year's Classic is shaping up as a truly international affair with Europe's top talent squaring off against America's best.

The Classic has a distinctly European flavor this year thanks to a possible race within a race between Europe's top outfits, Godolphin and Coolmore. After whipping Europe's best horses all season, Godolphin's Fantastic Light and Sakhee, and Coolmore's Galileo will now take their battle for world Thoroughbred supremacy to American soil.

BC AM Roundup 10/23: Mott faces an un-Hap-py dilemma

ELMONT, N.Y. - Among Hall of Fame trainers, D. Wayne Lukas is the resident ex-basketball coach.

But lately Bill Mott has been receiving a first-hand lesson in the frustration a hoops coach faces with a "tweener."

On the hardwood court, a "tweener" is a player who is tad small for one position and a step slow for another.

In Saturday's Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Belmont Park, the "tweener" is Mott's grass star, Hap.

Classic: A nip of vodka for Tiznow

ELMONT, N.Y. - The pressure of training a horse for races like the World Thoroughbred Championships, or of training a reigning Horse of the Year, might drive a trainer to drink. But in the case of Jay Robbins, he's going to be the bartender, not the barfly.

Juvenile Fillies: Will Habibti's third start ever be the charm?

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Bob Baffert knows Habibti has the talent to win Saturday's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. He's just not sure she has the necessary seasoning.

An illness forced Habibti to miss the Grade 1 Oak Leaf earlier this month, meaning she will enter the Juvenile Fillies with only two races, and none since Aug. 26 when she won the Del Mar Debutante.

Juvenile: Reminiscent of Silverbulletday

ELMONT, N.Y. - Preparations for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile were non-stop Monday morning with nine of the 13 horses pre-entered for the $1 million race putting in their final workouts at four tracks around the country.

In Southern California, all eyes were on Officer, the unbeaten son of Bertrando, who figures to be the shortest-priced favorite on Saturday's World Thoroughbred Championships card.

Bella Bellucci gallops so easily she fools the clockers

ELMONT, N Y - Another picture-perfect morning for training with the track fast, the turf firm, the wind calm, and a temperature in the mid 50's. There was action aplenty from the time trainer D. Wayne Lukas sent out Classic entrant Orientate for a pre-dawn drill until Sarafan ended a parade of post-break Breeders' Cup workers nearly three hours later.

The busy morning also featured the first local appearance of Tiznow, who made not one but two trips to the track and nearly stopped traffic a couple of times when propping and wheeling.

Turf: Timboroa will go near front

ELMONT, N.Y. - The re-emergence of Timboroa has come in the nick of time this fall.

A change of race tactics has allowed him to secure a spot among the top American turf horses, a status he will carry into Saturday's $2 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Belmont Park.

With wins in the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap and Grade 1 Turf Classic at Belmont in his last two starts, Timboroa is enjoying the best streak of a career that includes 10 wins in 22 starts and earnings of $1,188,734.
