Consolidator rights ship just in time

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - They have run only one of the first 20 Breeders' Cup Juveniles without D. Wayne Lukas. They weren't about to run another.

Just when it seemed like Lukas would not be represented in the race, Consolidator jumped up and won the Grade 1 Lane's End Breeders Futurity at Keeneland. Now, Lukas will aim for his sixth victory in the Juvenile with a colt who has won a two-turn, 1 1/16-mile race, the same conditions of the Juvenile.

Sprinter Bwana Charlie turns heads

The Jerkens family, Allen and Jimmy, accounted for most of the major action at Lone Star Park on Tuesday morning, sending out all three of their Breeders' Cup hopefuls to work before daybreak under the lights. It was trainer Steve Asmussen's Bwana Charlie, however, who stole the show with his eye-catching half-mile trial following the renovation break.

The morning also produced the first local looks at some of the recent arrivals, including likely Breeders' Cup favorites Pleasantly Perfect (Classic) and Sweet Catomine (Juvenile Fillies).

Don't give up on Afleet Alex

Afleet Alex's five-furlong work Monday was the fastest at the distance by three seconds.

Though Afleet Alex suffered his first career defeat in the Champagne, his trainer, Tim Ritchey, believes few people have lost faith in the multiple-stakes-winning colt.

"He's got a bigger fan club than he had before the Champagne," said Ritchey, who believes Afleet Alex encountered significant trouble when beaten a half-length by Proud Accolade in the Champagne. "He's a very popular horse right now. A lot of people like seeing that grit and determination."

Storm Flag Flying eyes unique feat

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Parting will be such sweet sorrow for those who have been associated for the past three years with the filly Storm Flag Flying. She was a champion at age 2, regressed last year at age 3, but has come back with an excellent campaign this year, one which could lead to another championship should she capture the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff on Saturday at Lone Star Park.
