ELMONT, N.Y. - The first day of clocker reports for the 2005 Breeders' Cup proved to be a relatively quiet one at Belmont Park, with most of the significant action taking place on the West Coast, where Rock Hard Ten worked at Santa Anita and Lost in the Fog breezed over his home course at Golden Gate.

First Samurai seeks to win the Juvenile and the role as Kentucky Derby favorite.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Led by four defending race winners, an unbeaten sprinter who is a candidate for Horse of the Year, an unbeaten 2-year-old colt, a miler who has won eight straight races, a deep, talented pool of European raiders, and several Classic candidates seeking Horse of the Year themselves, a total of 117 horses were announced on Wednesday as pre-entries for the 22nd Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on Oct. 29 at Belmont Park.

BC Juvenile: Tough call, but Bailey picks 'Samurai'

ELMONT, N.Y. - Of Jerry Bailey's record 14 Breeders' Cup victories, three have come in the Juvenile. So obviously he has made some smart decisions in that race.

This year, Bailey was in the enviable position of having to choose between First Samurai and Private Vow, both of whom he has ridden to three straight victories. Bailey chose First Samurai, but admitted it wasn't as easy a decision as some may think. Bailey said part of the reason was his longstanding relationship with Frank Brothers, the trainer of First Samurai, who also put Bailey on his first classic winner, Hansel.

Azamour (left), beating Ace in the Prince of Wales's Stakes, joins fellow European-based horses Bago and Motivator as the top choices in the BC Turf.

The $2 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Belmont Park on Oct. 29 will have its typical international feel this year, with six of the 15 pre-entered horses traveling from England, France, or Ireland. The European-based starters are expected to dominate the betting in a somewhat open race.

BC Mile: Leroidesanimaux rules pre-entries

With Dubawi having been retired and Starcraft apparently opting for the Breeders' Cup Classic, Leroidesanimaux's name stood out even more boldly when pre-entries for the $1.5 million-added Breeders' Cup Mile were publicly announced Wednesday.

A winner of eight straight races, beaten only once since being imported from his native Brazil and only three times in a 12-start career, Leroidesanimaux comes into the Mile having dismantled Grade 1 opposition by nearly eight lengths in the Atto Mile on Sept. 18 at Woodbine.

BC F&M Turf: Bailey gets call to ride Ouija Board

Jerry Bailey has picked up the mount in the $1 million Filly and Mare Turf on Ouija Board, the British mare who won the race last year as the odds-on favorite under Kieren Fallon and was ridden in a recent prep victory by Frankie Dettori.

With Fallon riding Mona Lisa for Michael Tabor and Dettori riding Sundrop for Godolphin, the mount on Ouija Board was open. "I suppose I wouldn't be the first to say he's the No. 1 jockey in America," trainer Ed Dunlop said Wednesday from England. "We're happy to get him."

BC Sprint: Fog fails to scare off competition

Horsephotos
Lost in the Fog puts his undefeated record on the line in the Sprint.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Lost in the Fog is expected to be the shortest-priced favorite on this year's Breeders' Cup program, but despite the presence of the undefeated 3-year-old sensation, a full contingent of 14 horses was pre-entered Monday for the $1 million Sprint. If all 14 make it into the starting gate, it will be the first time a full field has contested the six-furlong Sprint since the Breeders' Cup was last held at Belmont Park in 2001.

BC Distaff: Ashado may face packed house

Horsephotos
Ashado looks to repeat her win in last year's Distaff.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Ashado will seek to become only the second horse to win the Breeders' Cup Distaff twice, and she may face the largest field in the race since 1992, when she makes her career finale in this year's $2 million Distaff on Oct. 29 at Belmont Park.

BC Juvenile Fillies: Round 4 for budding rivals

They have only been racing for six months, but Folklore and Adieu have already forged a pretty strong rivalry. The fourth meeting of their careers will be the focus of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Belmont Park on Oct. 29.

Adieu and Folklore were two of 14 pre-entered for the Juvenile Fillies, a race that should determine the divisional champion. Adieu holds a 2-1 edge over Folklore, having beaten her in the Astoria and Grade 2 Spinaway. Folklore handed Adieu her only defeat in the Grade 2 Adirondack on opening day at Saratoga.
