F&M Turf: Rosinka out with ankle chip

Rosinka, a Saratoga stakes winner who was third in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont Park on Sept. 29, will miss the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf because of a bone chip in an ankle, trainer Graham Motion said on Wednesday.

Motion said Rosinka was scheduled to be taken to a clinic near his Maryland base on Thursday for further evaluation.

"It would be something that she did in her last race," he said. "Once I started galloping her, the ankle flared up."

Juvenile: Majestic Warrior still on the bubble

A stunning loss by Majestic Warrior combined with season-ending injuries to Ready's Image and The Roundhouse has left the Breeders' Cup Juvenile field in flux just days before pre-entries are to be submitted on Monday.

Majestic Warrior finished sixth as the favorite in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park, and as of Wednesday, his trainer, Bill Mott, said no decision had been made on the Breeders' Cup status of the colt.

Two who clinched berth aren't running

The $2 million Sprint had more "Win and You're In" races, five in all, than any other Breeders' Cup event. But of the five guaranteed spots, only three are expected to be taken when entries are drawn for the Sprint on Oct. 23.

Expected to take their guaranteed spots are Idiot Proof and Greg's Gold, first and second in Sunday's Grade 1 Ancient Title, along with Vosburgh winner Fabulous Strike.

Greg's Gold, an unlucky second in the Ancient Title, was already in the Sprint by virtue of his victory in the Pat O'Brien Handicap at Del Mar seven weeks earlier.

Big Six scaring off competition

The strong core group of contenders for the Breeders' Cup Classic has largely scared off any fringe players, so the field will not come anywhere close to the maximum of 14.

The prospect of facing Any Given Saturday, Curlin, Hard Spun, Lawyer Ron, Street Sense, and Tiago is not being taken lightly, least of all by Richard Dutrow Jr., the trainer of Diamond Stripes, who won last week's Meadowlands Cup.

New Yorkers in a strong position

With virtually every major prep race for the Breeders' Cup out of the way, the concentration of power for the $1 million BC Dirt Mile clearly has settled in New York.

River's Prayer knocked out by injury

The Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint lost a top contender Sunday when River's Prayer sustained a career-ending injury during what was to be a five-furlong workout at Hollywood Park.

"It happened to her in the first quarter-mile of the work, between the three-eighths pole and quarter pole," said Paula Capestro, trainer of River's Prayer. "She clipped her left front ankle and fractured a sesamoid."

Much uncertainty surrounds several prospects

Another round of Breeders' Cup Mile prep races, and the division still tilts toward the inscrutable.

Last Saturday's Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland produced a longshot winner, Purim, who also figures to be a bomb on Breeders' Cup Day. But at least he is going. The winner of last Sunday's Oak Tree Mile, Out of Control, is not expected to participate in the BC Mile.

Old Man Buck faces Cup decision

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Gio Ponti and Globetrotter positioned themselves as Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf candidates with victories in Sunday's Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland and Monday's Grey Stakes at Woodbine, respectively.

But it was Cradle winner Old Man Buck, who ran third in Saturday's Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland, that may have done the most to race himself into the Breeders' Cup - be it in the Juvenile Turf or the Juvenile.

BC Distaff: Jerkens seeks first Cup win

While there is no clear-cut betting favorite for this year's $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff, there is little doubt who the sentimental choice will be.

Teammate earned a shot in the Distaff with a good third-place finish in Sunday's Spinster Stakes at Keeneland. She will try to give Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens his first Breeders' Cup victory. At 78, Jerkens could become the oldest trainer to win a Breeders' Cup race, surpassing Phil Johnson, who at 77 won the 2002 Classic with Volponi. Jerkens is 0 for 10 in the Breeders' Cup series.

Tough Tiz's Sis (left) hooks Hystericalady en route to winning the Lady's Secret Sunday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting.
ARCADIA, Calif. - After Tough Tiz's Sis won the Lady's Secret Stakes at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting on Sunday, trainer Bob Baffert said it would probably take about eight bottles of wine that night to make the filly's owners supplement her to the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff at Monmouth Park on Oct. 27.

Baffert and owners Cathy Watson and Paul Weitzman must have had a heck of a party, because on Monday, Baffert said, "We're going to take a serious look at it."
