BC blood tests all negative

All horses entered in the Breeders' Cup who were selected for random prerace testing for banned blood-enhancing drugs tested negative, Breeders' Cup officials said Wednesday.

Breeders' Cup collected blood samples from the horses on Oct. 15, the day that pre-entries were taken. The samples were taken from horses who were on the grounds at Monmouth Park, the location of this year's Breeders' Cup, and also at other racetracks and training centers in the United States and overseas.

Day One goes extra mile

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Eight is not enough, and two days are better than one. These inspired calculations led the board of directors at Breeders' Cup Ltd. to come up with a whole new creation for their annual event, and thus the two-day weekend is born Friday at Monmouth Park at the 24th Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Crunch time for Hard Spun

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Of this year's celebrated crop of 3-year-olds, there might not be a more versatile runner than Hard Spun. He has won stakes on conventional dirt surfaces and synthetic surfaces. He has won stakes races going short and going long. He has won on a fast track and on a sloppy track.

What he hasn't done, it seems, is win when everybody's watching, and that has made Hard Spun perhaps the most underappreciated, overlooked runner in Saturday's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park.

Major works over for Breeders' Cup

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Most of the horses scheduled to compete in the 2007 Breeders' Cup were finally on the grounds by Wednesday morning, although many of the latest arrivals did nothing more strenuous than visit the paddock and jog over a racetrack that remained fast despite some intermittent showers.

Mott remaking his reputation

ELMONT, N.Y. - The summer of 2007 signaled a renaissance of sorts in the training career of Bill Mott.

Although he's won more than 3,600 races, ranks third all-time in purse money won, and has been in the Hall of Fame for almost a decade, Mott had dropped out of the spotlight for several years following the loss of some key owners.

This year, Mott recaptured the public's attention by winning the Saratoga trainers' title with 27 victories. Twelve of those wins came with the type of horse he had not been known for being proficient with: 2-year-olds.

Cry and Catch Me scratched with fever

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Cry and Catch Me, winner of the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita, was scratched out of Saturday's $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies after developing a temperature, trainer Bob Baffert said Wednesday.

Baffert said Cry and Catch Me had a 101.3-degree temperature Wednesday morning, so he just walked her around the shed row at his Monmouth Park barn. He took the filly's temperature again at 11 a.m. and it was 102 degrees.

Stellar field set for Classic

Calvin Borel guides Street Sense back toward the Monmouth clubhouse Tuesday before turning to begin his final workout for the Classic.
OCEANPORT, N.J. - The draw for post positions for Saturday's 24th Breeders' Cup was delayed Tuesday morning by a half-hour to process paperwork, then took a while to commence owing to some windy speeches. For the first time, 11 races were drawn, and the process took 49 minutes from start to finish. But the long wait was worth it in the end, for when the field was finalized for the biggest and last race, the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, it yielded one of the best lineups in the history of this event, one that most likely will decide Horse of the Year.

Street Sense works like a champ

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Is Street Sense the same horse on the road that he is over at his home base at Churchill Downs? Some who may have had their doubts got out of bed a little earlier than normal on Tuesday morning to see exactly how Street Sense would handle the Monmouth Park strip during his all-important final work for Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic.

Street Sense was one of four Breeders' Cup starters to record official works at Monmouth on Tuesday, a day that also provided the first look at some of the European invaders who will compete this weekend.

Kip Deville passes test to make Mile

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Kip Deville is a go for the Breeders' Cup Mile, getting in a final work for the race on Tuesday at Aqueduct after having his breeze delayed by a minor leg issue.

Trainer Rick Dutrow had planned to work Kip Deville on Monday, but postponed the work after finding minor swelling in Kip Deville's pastern, a part of the lower leg. Dutrow insisted the filling was minor and said he expected Kip Deville to be fine on Tuesday, and that apparently was the case.

"There are no issues at all with him now," said Dutrow.

Discreet Cat's connections say he's in peak form

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Either you're a believer in Discreet Cat or you're not.

A flashy colt who won his first six starts before disappointing with two resounding defeats, both following layoffs, Discreet Cat figures to be favored Friday in the inaugural running of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Monmouth Park.
