O'Neill acquires second contender

Two weeks ago, after Azul Leon finished sixth in the Grade 1 Norfolk, it looked like trainer Doug O'Neill would be just one of the crowd in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

But the developments of last weekend may have elevated O'Neill to leader of the pack when the Juvenile is run on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita. The eye-catching victory by Square Eddie in last weekend's Lane's End Breeders' Futurity, coupled with several key defections, likely catapults Square Eddie to the favorite's role in what is shaping up as a wide-open Juvenile.

Delightful Kiss displays sharp synthetic form

Pete Anderson's most significant win as a jockey came at 1 1/2 miles when Cavan foiled Tim Tam's bid for the Triple Crown in the 1958 Belmont Stakes. His most important win as a trainer could come at the same distance, when he sends out the lone horse in his stable, Delightful Kiss, in the inaugural $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon.

"He reminds me of the horse I won the Belmont with," Anderson said. "Their running styles are absolutely the same. Cavan would drop back and come flying."

Carriage Trail excels as synthetic specialist

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The race name may be different, and the surface may be new, but there will be something quite familiar when the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic is run on Oct. 24 at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting. Three times in its previous 24 runnings, which came on dirt as the Distaff, trainer Shug McGaughey won the race, with the magnificent Personal Ensign, Hall of Famer Inside Information, and longshot Pleasant Home.

Mr. Nightlinger the favorite in Turf Sprint

Although a surprise entry could always shake things up, it looks like nothing happened during the final round of preps for the inaugural BC Turf Sprint to keep Mr. Nightlinger from being the favorite. That's the main reason trainer Bret Calhoun isn't bothering to send Chamberlain Bridge, winner of the Woodford Stakes last weekend at Keeneland, to California for the 6 1/2-furlong race on Santa Anita's hillside turf course.

West Coast horses top Sprint

A series of untimely injuries, the majority to East Coast-based runners, will give this year's edition of the Breeders' Cup Sprint a decidedly West Coast flavor when the race is decided over the Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita on Oct. 25.

Driving Snow skipping Breeders' Cup

Driving Snow nearly upset Bittel Road in Sunday's Grade 3 Woodford Reserve Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland, finishing a close second, beaten a head.

Don't bank on an immediate rematch. While Bittel Road is likely for the Oct. 25 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita, Driving Snow is not, said co-owner Tommy Hamilton, who owns him with his wife, Bonnie.

Rainbow View passes Juvenile Fillies Turf

Trainer John Gosden said Tuesday that the sensational English filly Rainbow View is not being considered for the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf. She is now expected to run in the Juvenile Fillies on the Pro-Ride surface.

Rainbow View, a Kentucky-bred owned by George Strawbridge, is unbeaten in four starts. Her recent victory in the Group 1 Meon Valley Stud Fillies Mile at Ascot earned her a guaranteed berth in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

C Karma breezed five-eighths in a bullet 59 seconds over Woodbine's Polytrack on Monday, much to the delight of trainer Greg De Gannes.

Forever Together shoots for title

As the 2009 season progresses, Forever Together has collected Grade 1 wins in the Diana Handicap at Saratoga in July and the First Lady Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 3. Her next objective will be the most difficult, the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 24, her first start at 1 1/4 miles.

At stake is a possible Eclipse Award title as the outstanding turf female against what is expected to be an international field.

Lady Sprinter an unknown in F-M Sprint

Lady Sprinter is the best Breeders' Cup candidate no one has heard of, yet if the filly from South America postponed her U.S. debut by merely one day, she would be "live" against males Oct. 25 in the six-furlong, $2 million BC Sprint.

"She beat colts twice in Argentina, but here it's completely different," trainer Juan Reviriego said. "Here, it's the greatest horses in the world."

Well Armed leaning toward Dirt Mile

Talk about a nice problem to have: Well Armed earned his way into the Dirt Mile with a track-record score in the Win and You're In San Diego Handicap; 10 weeks later, his victory in the Goodwood also gave him an automatic berth in the Classic, where he would constitute a formidable WinStar Farm entry along with Travers winner Colonel John.
