Clocker: Spring House flashes surprising speed

ARCADIA, Calif. - The first sighting of the European contingent and an unusual workout down the hillside turf course served as a prelude to Tuesday's all-important post position draw for Saturday's 14 Breeders' Cup events.

Tuesday's Breeders' Cup work tab was a light one with two members of that list, trainer Bruce Headley's pair of Surf Cat (Dirt Mile) and Magnificience (Filly and Mare Sprint), going in total darkness at 5 a.m. The action concluded 5 1/2 hours later when Idiot Proof came rolling down the hill in preparation for the Turf Sprint.

Mast Track and Pyro in Dirt Mile after all

ARCADIA, Calif. - After a 24-hour period in which three horses thought to be out or in other races had their connections reconsider, a full field of 12 was entered Tuesday morning in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, to be run Saturday on the Pro-Ride synthetic surface at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting.

Goldikova looks like the hot one

ARCADIA, Calif. - Irish-bred stretch-runners drew the bookends in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile, with Shakis on the fence and Whatsthescript on the far outside of an 11-horse field. An Irish-bred front-runner, Daytona, will break from middle of the field in post 5, and will help push along the pace. And right next to Daytona, in post 4, is the Irish-bred, French-based 3-year-old filly Goldikova, who just may be the star of the whole shebang.

Indyanne in tough spot for F-M Sprint

The top-class Northern California-based speedball Indyanne shipped Tuesday from Golden Gate to Santa Anita, where she was due to arrive at noon.

After drawing a sorry post for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Friday, Indyanne might want to stay on the van. Her chances in the seven-furlong Filly and Mare Sprint were severely compromised when she drew post 2 in the 14-horse field.

Laragh heads Juvenile Fillies Turf

The quality of the race? Who can say right now. But in terms of numbers, the inaugural edition of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf was a hit, drawing a full field of 12, with two also-eligibles, when final entries were taken Tuesday. A 15th horse, Screen Gem, was excluded from the race.

Folk Opera figures out front in F-M Turf

Folk Opera may not get away with an easy lead in Friday's $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita.

She has already used those tactics to steal one Grade 1 race in North America this year - the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine on Oct. 4. Folk Opera's win justified Godolphin Racing's decision to supplement her to Friday's BC Filly and Mare Turf for $180,000.

Marathon field lacks early pace

Somewhere in the field of nine that entered the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon, you'd think there would be an obvious pacesetter.

But when front-running prerace favorite Fairbanks switched over to the BC Classic, it muddled the pace scenario for the 1 1/2-mile main-track Marathon and left it with a favorite (Sixties Icon) whose 16 career starts have all been on grass.

Favorites will start inside in Sprint

The giant sigh of relief heard during the post position draw for Saturday's Breeders' Cup Sprint came from trainer Todd Beattie after the first pill out of the cup was No. 1 and the corresponding horse's name called out was Cost of Freedom and not his Fabulous Strike.

Out of Control stretching out in Turf

It may seem crazy to ask a horse to try 1 1/2 miles for the first time in a race as difficult as Saturday's $3 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita, but history will be on Out of Control's side this weekend.

The last time the BC Turf was run at Santa Anita, in 2003, Johar tried the distance for the first time and finished in a dead heat for first with the European star High Chaparral.

Idiot Proof tries the downhill turf

Idiot Proof may be based at Santa Anita, but until Tuesday there was at least one part of the track he hadn't seen. So in a departure from the normal routine, Idiot Proof worked approximately four furlongs down the hillside turf course on Tuesday morning in preparation for Saturday's $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. Daily Racing Form timed his move in 47.85 seconds, with a final eighth in 12.04.
