Wicked Whisper makes it look easy in Frizette Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Wicked Whisper drew clear for a 2 3/4-length victory in Sunday's Frizette Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Wicked Whisper backed up her easy maiden win at Saratoga in August with another relatively easy victory in Sunday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park.

Able to get clear without any early pressure under Joel Rosario, Wicked Whisper set comfortable fractions of 22.91 seconds for the quarter, 46.49 for the half-mile, and 1:11.12 for six furlongs while maintaining a two-length margin throughout. Shaken up a little by Rosario inside the eighth pole, Wicked Whisper responded and beat Frank’s Rockette by 2 3/4 lengths.

Sistercharlie delivers in Flower Bowl Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Sistercharlie got up for a three-quarter-length victory in Sunday's Grade 1 Flower Bowl at Belmont.

ELMONT, N.Y. – As much of a sure thing as Sistercharlie looked to be on paper in Sunday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont Park, there was still something gnawing at trainer Chad Brown all afternoon.

“The thing I was thinking about today was her being 0 for 2 at Belmont, the only track she’s lost at in our care,” said Brown, acknowledging that both losses were by narrow margins.

El Tigre Terrible surprises in Speakeasy Stakes

Emily Shields
El Tigre Terrible returned $49.20 for his victory Sunday in the Speakeasy Stakes at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – El Tigre Terrible stormed between runners, including one stablemate, to win Sunday’s $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes for 2-year-old turf sprinters at Santa Anita in an upset, launching a winner’s circle discussion about whether a start in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint here on Nov. 1 is financially sensible.

El Tigre Terrible ($49.20) earned a fees-paid berth to the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint, but the berth can be redeemed only if the gelding is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program for $100,000 by Oct. 21, the day pre-entries are due.

Blue Prize closed determinedly for a half-length win in Sunday's Grade 1 Spinster.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Blue Prize won the Spinster last year, but it didn’t necessarily win her many additional fans. Perhaps to prove a point, Blue Prize went out and did it again Sunday at Keeneland in the 64th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 race.

Ridden by Joe Bravo, Blue Prize trailed most of the way in the 1 1/8-mile Spinster before closing stoutly to defeat the 7-10 favorite, Elate, by a half-length. She finished in 1:50.30 over a fast track, returning $17.20 as a distant third choice in a field of five fillies and mares.

Peace Achieved was a neck winner in Sunday's Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland.

LEXINGTON, Kentucky – On Saturday, the jockey Miguel Mena endured a tough trip on First Premio, who finished a close and troubled fourth in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile. Sunday, Mena had no such issues in the Grade 3, $250,000 Bourbon Stakes, where Peace Achieved raced prominently from the start and finished just well enough to hold off Vitalogy, winning by a neck.

“Different kind of horse than yesterday,” Mena said. “This horse has the perfect tactical speed. He was cruising.”

Barbara D. Livingston
Four Wheel Drive was a three-length winner in Sunday's Grade 3 Futurity at Belmont Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Irad Ortiz Jr. had worked Four Wheel Drive several times in the morning during the summer to know he was capable of sitting behind horses. So when Jack and Noah outsprinted Four Wheel Drive for the early lead in Sunday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Futurity Stakes, Ortiz was content to sit second.

Sprint victory opens several Breeders' Cup options for Omaha Beach

Emily Shields
Omaha Beach is under consideration for three Breeders' Cup races.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A day after Omaha Beach scored a hard-fought win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship, trainer Richard Mandella was contemplating the 3-year-old colt’s next start with the Breeders’ Cup Sprint here on Nov. 2 at the fore of the discussion.

In his first start since a win in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in April, Omaha Beach rallied through the stretch to catch the graded sprint stakes winner Shancelot in the final strides.

Villa Marina could be Breeders' Cup bound off Prix de l'Opera upset

Villa Marina ran the race of her life to upset the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera on the Arc undercard Sunday at Longchamp, just holding off a late surge from the Coolmore filly, Fleeting.

The winner got home by just as head as Fleeting ran out of ground while finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Watch Me. Heavily favored Mehdaayih set the pace but was done a quarter-mile from the finish and faded to 10th, apparently struggling over very soft going.

Omaha Beach returns with gutsy win in Santa Anita Sprint Championship

Emily Shields
Omaha Beach (right) forged his way up the rail and on to a head victory over Shancelot in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship.

ARCADIA, Calif. – In the nearly six months since Omaha Beach had last raced, he was scratched from the Kentucky Derby, had throat surgery, had a comeback race at Del Mar scrapped, then another at Churchill Downs, before trainer Richard Mandella, with no other options really, decided to run him at the shortest distance of his career on Saturday in the six-furlong Santa Anita Sprint Championship.
