American Theorem will skip Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Emily Shields
American Theorem should appreciate the 1 1/16 miles of the American Pharoah Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. -- American Theorem will not run in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile next Friday, trainer George Papaprodromou said Saturday morning at Santa Anita, explaining that he did not feel the colt was ready for that test. The news was first reported by Joaquin Jaime on TVG.

"I don't feel my horse is 100 percent," Papaprodromou told Daily Racing Form Saturday morning. "I don't want to run against the best in the world if he's not. I want to do the right thing, not push him."

Debra A. Roma
Line of Duty, ridden by William Buick, earned an 83 Beyer Speed Figure for his Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf win Friday.

Breeders’ Cup Mile pre-entrant Line of Duty, who won the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, was seriously injured and subsequently euthanized Saturday morning in England.

Godolphin, the colt’s owner, reported the news on its website while providing no details regarding how Line of Duty got hurt or the specific nature of his injury. Line of Duty, trained by Charlie Appleby, was a plucky son of Galileo who competed hard in every race, though he had been winless since the BC Juvenile Turf last November.

Ward playing to win with strong trio in BC Juvenile Turf Sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Wesley Ward has won a combined 16 of 30 starts at the Turfway Park holiday meet and current winter-spring meet.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Horse trainers are humans, too. Wesley Ward can be as robotic as the next guy devoting 100 hours to his workweek, but he’ll also take time to laugh and joke or to smell the flowers, as they say.

In fact, Ward wasn’t even here at Santa Anita in 2014, when his six Breeders’ Cup starters recorded two wins, three seconds, and one third. He was at home in Florida, watching the races on his phone while his son Riley was competing in a high school track meet.

“State championships,” said Ward, underlining the importance.
