The re-scheduled Preakness Stakes on Oct. 3 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., will be a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic for the first time this year, Breeders’ Cup has announced.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Halladay exited his victory in Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Fourstardave Handicap in good order and will be pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 7.
The only thing trainer Todd Pletcher has to decide is when, or if, to run him before then.
The Fourstardave was Halladay’s 11th race in 14 months, so it would seem that one more race before the Breeders’ Cup is likely. The most logical spot for that race is the Grade 1, $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on Oct. 3, five weeks before the Breeders’ Cup.
Without spectators at Del Mar this summer and only a few owners in the stands, the stretch run of races has been eerily quiet compared to a typical year. Quiet, that is, until Red King turned for home in Saturday’s Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap.
Members of the Little Red Feather Racing partnership that co-owns Red King were in attendance and were rowdy in voice-rooting as their gelding held off a late threat from favored United to win his second consecutive stakes.
“That was really amazing,” said Billy Koch, the managing partner of Little Red Feather. “He’s so genuine.”
DEL MAR, Calif. – In the few months he’s had Maximum Security, trainer Bob Baffert has learned that he takes aggressive training. That was evident in the way he was prepared for the Pacific Classic, which he won Saturday at Del Mar, and likely will impact how he’s managed in coming months en route to his next major goal, the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
DEL MAR, Calif. – Only the people have let Maximum Security down. Not Maximum Security. With all he’s been through, ranging from the Kentucky Derby disqualification, to the arrest of his former trainer, to having the purse upheld following a victory in Saudi Arabia, no matter where he goes, from Gulfstream to Churchill Downs, Monmouth to Belmont, Aqueduct to Saudi Arabia, and now to California, Maximum Security has performed.
DEL MAR, Calif. – Saturday was one of the hottest days of the year in Southern California, but that orange orb in the sky wasn’t emanating nearly as much warmth as trainer Phil D’Amato, who, despite having a mandatory face cover, couldn’t hide his obvious delight at winning the Grade 2, $203,000 Del Mar Handicap with Red King.
“This one is really special,” he said.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Halladay gave indications in the spring that he was ready to raise his game to another level as a 4-year-old. Saturday, he gave an all-star performance winning the Grade 1, $400,000 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga in front-running fashion.
Making the lead soon after the start under Luis Saez, Halladay was able to relax on the lead, set comfortable fractions of 47.19 seconds for a half-mile and 1:10.15 for six furlongs, then repelled the challenge of the mare Got Stormy - last year’s Fourstardave winner - to win the one mile turf race by 1 1/4 lengths.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Tom’s d’Etat, who finished third after stumbling at the start of the Grade 1 Whitney on Aug. 1 at Saratoga, will train up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 7 at Keeneland, trainer Al Stall said Friday.
Stall said the combination of how well Tom’s d’Etat runs fresh and the absence of a prep in a suitable time frame prompted him to make the decision to wait for the Classic. Stall said he was hoping the Grade 2 Fayette Stakes, scheduled for Oct. 10 at Keeneland, would have been a week earlier.
Officials at Keeneland Racecourse on Thursday released the full condition book for its 17-day fall meet in October as well as the roster of supporting stakes for the Nov. 6-7 Breeders’ Cup.
Eight undercard stakes worth a total of $1 million will round out the two Breeders’ Cup dates, including the Grade 2, $200,000 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (formerly the Marathon) at 1 5/8 miles and the $150,000 Lafayette, a long dormant race to be run at seven furlongs.
From Germany to Dubai to England, 5-year-old Ghaiyyath has developed into an international star over the last year, and on Wednesday at York he will be favored to win his third straight Group 1 in the Juddmonte International.
