The $300,000 Rodeo Drive was Mucho Unusual’s first win in a race at the highest level for owner and breeder George Krikorian and trainer Tim Yakteen.

Susie Raisher
Firenze Fire ganando el Vosburgh S.

ELMONT, N.Y. - The career-ending injury to Volatile created a void in the sprint division. Firenze Fire did his best Saturday afternoon at Belmont Park to begin to fill it.

Returning to his favorite surface - a fast Belmont Park main track - Firenze Fire rebounded from a last-place finish in the Grade 1 Forego in the slop at Saratoga last month with a 2 3/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $150,000 Vosburgh Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Whether it’s in New York or Kentucky, Royal Ascot or France, or out here in California, trainer Wesley Ward is a terror in 2-year-old turf sprints.

On Saturday at Santa Anita, he added at least his second assured starter to his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint roster on Nov. 6 at Keeneland when the filly Amanzi Yimpilo outran seven males and another female to take the $102,000 Speakeasy Stakes.

Maxim Rate at top of her game for Rodeo Drive

Maxim Rate will shorten up from 1 3/8 miles to 1 1/4 miles in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive.

A deliberate and successful progression through the summer could lead to an outstanding autumn campaign for Maxim Rate, who will have her 2020 Grade 1 debut in Saturday’s $300,000 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita.

Maxim Rate was second by a head in a second-condition optional claimer at a mile on turf at Santa Anita in June in her first start since November. Maxim Rate was unbeaten in two starts on turf at the Del Mar summer meeting – a second-condition optional claimer at a mile on July 10 and the CTT and TOC Handicap for fillies and mares at 1 3/8 miles on Aug. 16.

Asmussen pinch-hits for Volatile with Engage in Vosburgh

Barbara D. Livingston
Engage finished second in the Wood Stephens, his last start, on June 9.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Steve Asmussen was supposed to win Saturday’s Grade 2, $150,000 Vosburgh with Volatile. With that horse retired due to injury, he will instead try to win it with Engage.

Away from the races since a fourth-place finish in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Engage will look to earn an automatic berth into this year’s BC Sprint when he faces five rivals in the Vosburgh at Belmont Park. The Vosburgh is designated a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, to be run Nov. 7 at Keeneland.

Notable Exception zigzagging to Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Coady Photography
Notable Exception wins his debut Sept. 4 at Arlington.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Although most runners in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita are trying to justify a trip to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile this fall at Keeneland, at least one is already guaranteed to ship.

Notable Exception will be stabled at Keeneland during Breeders’ Cup week, regardless of his performance Saturday at Santa Anita. That is because Keeneland happens to be home for the flashy debut winner owned and bred by Calumet Farm. And it begs the question – what is the Midwest-based colt doing on the West Coast anyway?
